Summer of Soul vs. Get Back for the best documentary oscar if you ask me. Both took unseen footage and created a phenomenal piece. They both lifted me to another place while I was watching.

Used to be on cookie clicker, my best game is Tetris. I recently played Mass Effect and Bioshock for the first time those are amazing game concepts with great story and execution. Also been playing some Halo Infinite multiplayer

As I’ve already said to the Oscar question over in the GB thread, @sir walter raleigh, it would be surprising if GB receives a single Oscar nomination, and would be something that the Oscar committee would need to explain were it to do so. Yes, there is every chance that the Oscars will keep in place the temporary change to the eligibility rules they used this year, that a film which had originally had a planned cinema release but ended up being released on a streaming service because of the pandemic would be eligible for Oscar consideration. Yes, GB was originally planned for a cinema release, and so you may think it would qualify on that criteria, and had Jackson ended up with a film that would be the case.

He didn’t though. GB was not pulled from cinemas because of the pandemic, but rather because – though a film was originally planned – Jackson ended up producing a three-part TV series and not a film. The Oscars do not do TV series, only films (and, in normal times, only films that have received a theatrical release). As soon as Jackson moved it from being a film to a series, it became  ineligible for Oscar consideration.

Yes, I expect it to receive nominations for the Emmys and the Golden Globes, both of which cover TV (with the Emmys being the TV equivalent of the Oscars, and the Golden Globes covering both TV and film), but the change from a film to a series means it doesn’t fall within the Oscars remit of the awards being for films that have had a cinema release, no more than the Emmys – with its TV remit – will be considering Summer of Soul which did receive a cinema release.

GB fell out of Oscar consideration the moment it switched from being a film to being a series. A three-part series is not a film. The Oscars do films.

I play mainly time management games, though not very well and usually with the timer off when that’s an option. Also a big Sims fan (with fan-made adult content added), but play is rubbish on this lousy ASUS laptop, which I’m looking to replace with an HP at the earliest opportunity.

Here’s a question, anyone using Windows 11 yet?

This laptop came with Windows 10 Pro installed, but has this sitting on the desktop…

W11.jpg

Is it worth pressing? Is 11 a good upgrade? How different is it?

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Windows X was crap, 11 is better. I regretted moving from 7 to X (skipping 8, which was on a work laptop and atrocious) and was relieved to move on. The download and install time was ages tho, pretty sure I left it overnight.

All my opinion, I take zero responsibility if you install and detest.

In contrast to mmm’s opinion, my dad (who works in IT), told me not to download 11 as it is woeful.

To each their own – I guess will also depend on the user and how you use it.

If you like 10, I’d recommend not upgrading for risk of not liking 11, and vice versa.

I’ve thought of a few family traditions that I believe are unique to California (and maybe the US). One of those traditions is the first trip to Disneyland. The first time I visited there was for my 2 year old birthday a few months after the park opened. We went back every year until my grandmother left LA after my grandfather passed away. Since then it has become a family tradition to celebrate every new child’s birthday in Disneyland at least once. The age isn’t always the same, but certainly by 5 years old. Don’t get me wrong, Disneyland is not for the faint-hearted. It can be a total mess of humanity. But you have been there enough the wave of nostalgia as you enter the park and walk down Main Street is overwhelming. When you add the thrill of accompanying a new member of the family who is seeing it the first time, the bad parts just melt away. Last time we were there on Main Street my little niece Jane squealed and we looked up to see Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Pluto marching toward us accompanied by a little boy (I think it was a Make a Wish event). Things like that add to our oral traditions each year. We have certain activities we always do and places we eat or go. For instance there is a certain curb that we like to sit on to watch the daily parade of Disney floats. We have sat there for every birthday since 1975 (over 40 years). Sometimes we need to aggressively reserve that space for 2 hours prior to the parade, but it is important that the birthday boy or girl sits in the prime spot with their legs dangling over the curb. My tradition of the last 20 years is to hang out with the birthday kid in front of the castle by the moat right around sunset, while all the other family members are in line for rides. I hope to convey what I am feeling at that moment, remembering family past. Depending on the kid that could mean feeding the ducks, playing pirates on the ramparts, or holding their balloon while they eat an ice cream. One time my granddaughter’s mouse ears fell in the moat and she cried her eyes out. An employee actually helped us fish them out and she still has them in her room today. Our newest family member is almost 3 and plans are in the making!

il_1588xN.1648778273_hygm-4.jpg

Shortly after I wrote this California went into lockdown and Disneyland closed. But finally today my sweet little niece is on her way (as part of a family caravan) to celebrate a 5th birthday. My Mom is 89 (and already miraculously recovered from the virus), so I am hanging out with her this time around. I am so happy this tradition is being upheld  and I have promised Janie that I will accompany her to her first concert when she is ready.

FUN!! Try to go on the AVATAR Flight of Passage (if you haven’t already). Daughter #2 says it is one of the best rides she has ever been on. Some people are brought to tears afterwards because it so beautiful. Daughter #1 has a big birthday coming up in 2024, so we are already making plans.
