I’m listening to a podcast about the JB films called “Kill James Bond” where they’re ranking the films according to how problematic they are (and they’re pretty problematic, especially the Connery ones). So far the least worst Bond is Lazenby not simply because he isn’t Connery but for some odd reason they largely left out the obvious racism and most of the violent sexism (except for an out-of-character slap), in fact this was a Bond who quit his job and got married. It also features a much better Blofeld played by Telly Savalas. Of course we couldn’t have that could we. No no no, the show must go on even if we had to pay Connery for a more expensive toupee. Oh well its only for one more movie and then we can have that smarmy Moore sashay in. It’s amazing what a few decades of perspective can give you on the movies your childish self thought were cool isn’t it.
My terrible neighbour decided to burn his flat down and fortunately for good brick walls between us and prompt work by the firies no more damage was done but my catte Mirk and I were forced to spend the week away while they rewired the flats because the bad neighbours flat was the head of the power loop. Fortunately a friend came to the rescue and Mirk had lodgings while I decamped to a motel that reminded me a lot of the room in Portal 2 but we’re back home again and I got a bonus TV aerial and booster added so thanks bad neighbour, enjoy your arson charges wherever they’re sending you, good riddance

@Timothy I’m almost finished reading the all 147 issues of Invincible. The new show is great if you haven’t seen it. If you like comics, particularly the darkness of Batman and the Superman’s feats of strength, You’ll love Invincible

I’m reading the original 1897 Dracula. Great, atmospheric beginning at the castle. Then nice foreboding as an elderly man predicts something evil coming to England as a storm blows in, with an out of control boat inbound. The captain’s journal of the deaths on board the boat is great, too. That’s where I’m up to now.

Also listening to a lot of Roy Orbison. Love Roy. What a voice. One of the all time greats.

I was thinking about him earlier this week. This is what John Lennon said in 1980 about Please Please Me :
Please Please Me is my song completely. It was my attempt at writing a Roy Orbison song, would you believe it? I wrote it in the bedroom in my house at Menlove Avenue, which was my auntie’s place… I remember the day and the pink coverlet on the bed and I heard Roy Orbison doing ‘Only The Lonely’ or something. That’s where that came from. And also I was always intrigued by the words of ‘Please, lend me your little ears to my pleas’ – a Bing Crosby song. I was always intrigued by the double use of the word ‘please’. So it was a combination of Bing Crosby and Roy Orbison.
PPM sounds completely Beatles to me, but it’s tempting to imagine a slower version sung by Orbison with that voice like velvet. It’s such a shame he never (to my knowledge) sang it.
In 2010 I went to a talk by George Martin, in which he spoke about the original version of PPM . He did a ‘Be My Baby’ beat using foot taps and handclaps (bom, bo-bom clap), so we have an approximate idea of the tempo and beat. Now imagine Roy singing over the top

I quite like that.

I do too. Thanks @Ron Nasty.
It was actually this cover of Handle With Care that made me think of it. Damien Robitaille does a pretty convincing George Harrison and Roy Orbison (and the rest, but the first two are nicer to listen to).

A modern tragedy: the cat has grown attached to you, and you to the cat. The cat is old, with a forlorn look in her eyes like she’s lost her husband out at sea. She scratches at your door multiple times a day, and meows aggressively at you when you come home after being gone for a day or two. And of course she’s not even yours–as you write this, her human comes from down the hall to retrieve her for the night. Does she know you’ll be leaving forever in just a month? Will she forget you at that point, or die of her old age before she has a chance to? Your writer friend calls this whole situation a “big oof of a bummer”, insisting that this is a term of art amongst writers. Such are the woes of a cat person. Press F to pay respects.
