I was a big fan of 9, 10 and 11. Lost interest with 12 and haven’t watched the show in years.

Same for me! Haven’t watched a single episode of Whitaker, or most of Capaldi’s run after his first two seasons.
I do love Smith’s Doctor very much, but looking back Moffat really needed to chill with the big epic all-encompassing story arcs. Like, we get it Steven, you’re very clever,* but it takes a way a lot of the enjoyment when it’s on such a level of grandeur that it literally spans every single series of Smith’s run. I liked what Russell T Davies always did, which was have an overarching storyline run through each season (Bad Wolf, Vote Saxon etc) but keep it relatively subtle and not have it take away from the overall enjoyment of each episode.
*For this reason, I’ve also found it very difficult to return to Sherlock. Once you twig that it’s there, Moffat’s cleverness is so suffocating that the show is basically unwatchable. I mean, a fecking boomerang?

I’ve tried watching Whittaker and, whilst I think there is something there, the storylines are turgid and the whole show reeks of trying too hard in everything. It’s like they have to make a point or send a message or somehow they have failed. No thanks.
Smith’s I just got bored with. It started off really well but seemed to drag on forever whilst becoming more complicated with every episode in trying to understand what was going on. Tho I really liked Amy and Rory’s final episode, that was class.
As said, I’ve dipped in and out since, wanting to like the show and get back into, but there is a lot of issues that will keep me from watching every episode. Maybe I should watch some more of Capaldi’s time.

Facts. Like I loved the first seasons of Sherlock but then all the plot twists and stuff started to really throw me off. And don’t even get me started on Season 4.
On the topic of Steven Moffat, has anyone else watched his new series Dracula on Netflix besides me? If you haven’t, don’t waste your time it’s g a r b a g e. It’s like Qman’s point– he made everything too clever to the point where it was annoying and every episode was just uncomfortable to watch. I was expecting something cool and gothic but instead, I got sexual tension in places where sexual tensions did not need to be and like philosophy I guess? Also the reasoning behind everything was stupid and anti-climatic and it was just overall a garbage fire once you got past the first episode.

Can’t speak to his (or anybody’s) Dr. Who, but I thought Matt Smith was pretty funny as the young Prince Philip on Netflix’s “The Crown”.

Great picks! I’m feeling a marathon tonight, so I think I’ll do those two and then the monster that is Utopia/The Sound of Drums/Last of the Timelords.

This thread of the fact that I have DVD box sets of seasons 6 and 7 that I’ve played once and then never touched again because streaming took over and now I feel bad because they’re just sitting on my bookshelf, untouched, on display next to my Star Trek TNG x Doctor Who hardback comic book and other nerdy possessions of mine. I can’t even choose to watch them anymore because we got rid of the DVD player in our house a long time ago 🙁

Some pretty unpleasant drama in a group chat distracted me after Human Nature, so I’m only just getting to the Family of Blood now. Better late than never, I suppose.
Side note: I have to say I thought the whole backlash to Jodie being cast was really dumb. It’s literally a character who regenerates into an entirely different body and personality every few years, somehow out of.. how many has it been? 14? 14 incarnations, the idea of the character never having been female before seems way more logical than the contrary would’ve been.

I never saw why it mattered. The Doctor was an alien Time Lord travelling thru time and space, to be a fan and buy into that but be horrified it could be a female was pure stupidity and downright ignorance (I’m sure someone could give me a line from a 1973 episode which proves it must be a male in the lead role).

Has anyone noticed that RYM has stopped censuring cover arts? Or is it just me?
A couple of weeks ago The Money Store, Houses of the Holy, Electric Ladyland, etc, all had a big grey cross because of nudity. Suddenly they’re all visible. I didn’t even know Electric Ladyland had a dirty version, I was expecting Jimi’s yellow face. I want to know if any of you have noticed it or maybe it was a censorship issue just where I am.

My vague impression at the time was that it wasn’t so much about her being female, but that people were concerned that it was going to be one of those situations where they put a woman into a role that’s traditionally been male for the sake of having a woman, and call it a substitute for decent acting/storytelling/etc. Like I said, I don’t watch Doctor Who, but everything I’ve heard about Doctor 14 seems to confirm that, unfortunately. And it’s a shame. Women deserve better representation than just crappy representation for the sake of it.

There was a lot of talk from people not happy because the Doctor had to be male because… I remember being bored by it all. In amongst it all there was also those concerned it was to satisfy a BBC quota and agenda so they were seen to be above reproach (those claiming it was a national disgrace if the BBC went with a male again). There were similar comments before it went to Capaldi but on a far lesser scale.
To be fair to Whittaker, the problem with her era is not her acting abilities. It’s the storylines (which has been an ongoing issue for a number of series), the companions, the need to shove in a message because otherwise…, and the fact it’s boring. I watched the first four and thought only Bradley Walsh was decent, the other two useless – tho for some reason I remember some reference to ‘Rubber Soul ‘. I don’t know exactly what but it could have been the album cover.

The people who are still complaining about Jodie’s Doctor purely because She’s A Woman are incels who hate women- even if we had a woman who had the Tom Baker/David Tennant magnitude, they’d still be bitching about “THE DOCTOR IS A MAN”.
I dislike Jodie’s Doctor because she has horrible writing, “come on fam” *shudders* and her storylines are very uninspiring. I don’t think Jodie is getting the material she deserves to flourish as The Doctor, it’s no flaw on her part. In previous things she’s done, she can bloody well act.
Anyhoo my favourite DW teaser ever!! Every time I see it I want to go back and watch Series 1.

The same concerns over the writing and storylines were also held during Capaldi’s time. It’s a shame as both are very good actors so they become missed opportunities.
