I was looking at the HDYDI thread talking about changing usernames, and it reminded of me when I chose my username. I was on a PiD craze, and the name had a nice ring to it. I remember when I first came on here one of the first posts I made was in the PiD thread and people thought I was a troll…and boy were they right.

Chris Eccleston is making me sad, he’s my favourite Doctor and all of the Doctors that are still alive did a little two-minute video or so ‘thank you’ for front line workers. Every Doctor except him. Like Chris I know you hated the way the BBC treated you (and other workers) during Who but come on, record yourself for 20 seconds saying you’re the Doctor and it would have made everyone happy.
His absence was enormous, made him look like a colossal dick.
I loved his Doctor, easily my favourite, but I’m of the opinion that if it’s not right for him he shouldn’t do. I’m sure he’s doing other things to show his appreciation so why phone in a 20-second thank you when he doesn’t mean it in this context. It’s meaningless.
This is also a reply to RN. And looking into it more now it’s a two-sided reply, the first being my initial thinking, the second being my revised:
He’s said before his great appreciation for the NHS, the way they treated and helped his father when he was dying, and their care in treating Chris’ own struggles with anorexia and mental health issues.
While he stayed away from the ‘DW’ imagery for a long time and if he had continued avoiding that connection until now, I would have been a bit more forgiving of his absence but he’s been going to conventions for the last 2 or 3 years where he is advertised as ‘that guy from DW and Thor’. He’s perfectly willing to sign Doctor Who things and talk Who, so it is something that he’s becoming more comfortable with. For people who don’t actively follow DW news and the convention circuit, they wouldn’t know but there are a lot of people who do. He wrote in his autobiography how much he appreciates DW and its fans:
“These days, I feel nothing but positive about the show, to the extent I have even started doing conventions, something I’d been wary of because I always wanted to earn my money from acting.”
“What I’ve actually found is some amazing people who want to talk to me not only about Doctor Who but Our Friends in the North, 28 Days Later, Second Coming, Shallow Grave, Cracker, and so on”.
“People bring memorabilia from across my whole career, which makes me feel good about my work and also about myself. It has healed something in me.
“Forget producers, forget politics – here are real people who have seen me do my stuff and want to shake my hand.”
It’s very easy for him to do a 20-second video, it only benefits him- in good publicity and making him look like a sound bloke. It benefits not only on a superficial level but also for other Who fans who work on the front line, it might make them happy that Eccleston who has a tendency to turn away from DW, that his desire to say “thank you” brought him back into the role of the Doctor.
ON THE OTHER HAND:
Looking at his Instagram (which I didn’t know was a thing until today), he and I fall under the “The NHS isn’t a charity and shouldn’t be treated like one” bracket. It wouldn’t surprise me if that’s why he didn’t do it, not bad blood or anything with the BBC, just that he feels there should be proper support (and therefore taxation) for the NHS. While last night’s fundraiser wasn’t directly for the NHS, he has shown to be quite strong in his beliefs and probably didn’t do a video for that reason.
NHS workers risking their lives to save lives during the Pandemic and working in “Corridor wards”immediately Pre-Pandemic should NOT be funded by Charity.
On a happier note Paul McGann is continuing to look great. Petition for him to be the Doctor again!

ASJ’s post inspired me to watch some Eccleston episodes last night. Reminds me why he’s my favourite Doctor, though I do love Tennant and Smith too. It’s good to hear that he’s becoming more comfortable with the role again, but I totally understand his reasoning for not taking part. Personally I have taken part in the NHS charity stuff (I got nominated to do the 5k and donate £5 thing) but I totally agree that the NHS isn’t a charity. It shouldn’t have to fall to random citizens like Captain Tom to keep it afloat.

Yep– my favorite doctor is by far David Tennant
Ngl I am a tiny bit surprised that Eccleston is someone’s fave doctor, but I can also get behind why. With that in mind– is anyone’s favorite doctor Peter Capaldi??? I’m curious…..

I love Capaldi, he’s the only one that I saw yesterday that I thought “ohh I wish he was back”. He’s so cool.
Purely from the “new” Doctors, it’d probably go Eccleston, Tennant, Capaldi, Smith, Whittaker for me. Don’t like Whittaker, she comes across as really phony to me and everything I see Matt in, I can see him ‘acting’.

I love him too– though it took me a bit to warm up to him once Smith left, but soon I was like “aww my surly Scottish grandpa.” I love his vibes
I was only wondering if he was anyone’s favorite because a lot of my fellow DW fans IRL (in my generation) don’t seem to like him that much– which I think that the only reason they don’t like him is that he’s not young and “adorably eccentric” like Matt. I suspect there’s some intrinsic ageism going on there but oh well

My order would prob be Tennant, Capaldi, Smith, Eccleston, Whittaker. Matt’s Doctor was a bit too eccentric for me and I only watched Season 1 of the “new” DW once so I don’t have enough to judge Eccleston. And I despise Whittaker’s Doctor– I tried to watch the first two episodes of the new seasons after Capaldi left and I was immediately bored out of my mind and couldn’t vibe with Whittaker’s Doctor at all.

For me, Matt was the first doctor for whom I actually watched the episodes as they were being released (we didn’t have a TV, so I had to watch them on iPlayer as soon as they’d finished airing), so I do have an attachment to his take on the character, and I think David Tennant probably had the most classic episodes of the show under his belt, but Chris’ sole season was the only one I had on DVD for years, so I’ve watched every episode countless times, and now everytime I watch them it makes me very nostalgic for my childhood.
I just love everything about his Doctor – the lightness and the sense of humour, the northern relatable-ness factor, and best of all the palpable darkness and regret underscoring every episode. His Doctor was one learning to open up his heart and love again after trauma, and that’s such a beautiful thing to watch onscreen. Also, I love the way the show was directed back then – it’s a great mixture of the monsters and whatnot that you love as a kid, and then the more adult-orientated humour that you appreciate more as you get older.

I always loved the scene in The Parting of the Ways where in order to send Rose home safely in the TARDIS, he pretends to have this eureka moment and think of some way to save the day, only for his excited expression to change as soon as he leaves the TARDIS, with him turning around to send it away remotely. Amazing acting.

Eccleston’s portrayal was my first real experience of ‘Doctor Who’ having only vague memories of McCoy and other odds and ends and I loved it from the start. There was no awful romanticism like we had to suffer later and I delighted in Eccleston’s light-hearted approach whilst he was happy to give changes yet took no bullshit. The Doctor could suddenly change from one extreme to the other and it was great viewing.
I always thought it lost its way with Tennett and Rose’s nonsense constant googly eyes and Martha was a waste of space. It really picked up against when Donna came back in, I was so relieved when they quickly ruled out any funny business between them.

Should add that all episodes from series 1 to 11 (that’s from Eccleston onwards) are currently free to watch on BBC’s iPlayer. Also available is ‘Torchwood‘ (the ending of episode 5 of ‘Miracle Day’ really distressed me at the time it was first broadcast.

You can also watch all of them + Torchwood on Amazon’s streaming service (it’s free if you have a Prime subscription….which technically isn’t free when you look at the bigger picture of things but still) (I’m only adding this because BBC iPlayer isn’t available to anyone outside the UK…sadly)

Like ASJ My favorite is also Eccleston. I was sad when he left. He was my introduction to the show. I’m not a fan of anything after Smith, and I actually haven’t watched anything after Clara’s last season, and really have no intention to.

I really wanted to like Capaldi’s era but the storylines were so poor at times and Clara annoyed me. I came back after she left and they brought that annoying as anything school kid in.
Since then i’ve dipped in and out but nothing has preserved my interest.

I also hate Capaldi’s companions. Clara (and I’ll add Amy and Rory to that as well) were there for too long- companions should have 2 seasons max. Bill was just annoying, with her never-ending questions. Like, I know it’s realistic but it’s grating!
Whittaker’s storylines are just boring, her companions are horrible (I am so sad for every single other actor who auditioned for Ryan and did not get it because I’m sure you’d feel awful looking at the actual fella that they did pick) and apparently there were 000s of other Doctors before Hartnell???? Makes sense, brah.
Anyways, I’m just hoping for a nice mercy-killing to Chibnall’s era, whereby we all forget it ever happened and live happily ever after. It’s mildly hilarious reading Doctor Who Magazine though, it’s like they’re on a sinking ship but they’re saying- it’s still good, it’s fine, best the show has ever been. When the FINAL episode of the series, got the LOWEST ratings the show has ever got since the 2005 revival. The final episode!!!! That is just embarrassing.
