I’m not the biggest U2 fan but The Edge is a pretty good player texturally; some of the soundscapes he creates on The Joshua Tree in particular are amazing.

The intro to this song is particularly great:

The reason Edge is there @Dark Overlord , is that he’s a riff-maker just like Jack and Jimmy. A gearhead looking down on Edge is like the Arctic dissing Antarctica for having too much snow. paul-mccartney-facepalm_gif

But really the problem with that doco is that it’s poorly conceived and edited. You can’t just put 3 guys in a room for a few hours and get magic, no matter how good or interesting they are as people or musicians.  If you can’t engineer a situation that gives them more time to talk and play then at best you’re going to get an incomplete picture, and at worst delivers cringey moments that make me wonder what the makers agenda was. Jack comes off as a whiny millennial, Edge as an obsessed gearhead, and Jimmy as a bluesdad whose hobby got away from him.  ahdn_paul_01It’s just frustrating and unfair to watch for me and I imagine really confusing to a non-musician.

Working on another cover as a way of teaching myself a new DAW called REAPER, I let the Smiths one out on facebook and people said nice things about my voice so I’m looking for other stuff to do. And trying desperately to not want guitars I see on the internet, I need a jazz bass first but ooh there’s so many good P90-based guitars out now. Everyone is trying to do a good SG/LP Junior I think because P90+fuzz is the new cute sound (they’re not wrong, it’s great), so I keep seeing awfully tempting things and daydreaming ahdn_john_08_gif

Have a Vox doco:

Speaking of good P90 guitars oh my cat the new Epiphone range is both affordable and awesome. Actual quote from the internet “i would throw myself off a bridge to get that p90 blue/green SG”, about this beauty:

That’s the SG Special in Faded Pelham Blue (the colours in old SGs reacted with UV, so blue would fade to green, red would fade to brown). There’s also

My only issue with it is that they’re using the old wraparound bridge that isn’t adjustable for intonation, but at that price I could stand to put a new bridge in!

@lovelyritametermaid I played the Something solo on a Les Paul in a shop once and, although it felt horribly clunky to play compared to my sweet buttery Strat, the tone just about made me weep tears of guitar-geek joy.

I love the Les Paul, but recently i’ve demoed the SG and the ES, and I must admit that the Les Paul is probably my third favorite Gibson guitar. I’ve never been a fan of the way the SG looks in cherry red, but Duane Allman’s has a slight browner stain that looks great.

The playability on the SG is as good as any guitar I’ve ever picked up.

The brown is a faded cherry SG, they did that when exposed to the UV in sunlight. It’s important enough that Gibson/Epiphone offer brown/faded red models! A different thing is when you have a coloured guitar sprayed with a nitro clear coat, it too reacts to UV and goes yellow which is how vintage blue guitars look green, this happened to quite a few 335’s and Casinos.

So after I took my examen in French today, I was screwing around on my computer and I found these babies:

Being raised on the Grateful Dead, I can say that I very much covet one of these gorgeous ukes and I want every single one. Especially these ones:

Any guitarists here who like to play around in different tunings?

Today I tried DADAAD; it’s basically DADGAD except the G string gets tuned up a tone, meaning that when you strum it with the strings open you get the most gorgeous drone sound. There are some pretty cool chords you can use in it; here’s a couple:

D—0—0—0—4—9-
A—0—0—0—0—9-
A—2—4—5—4—0-
D—0—0—0—4—0-
A—2—4—5—0—0-
D—2—4—5—0—0-

I put some money down on one of these (Squire CV70’s Jazz Bass):

0374540506_gtr_frt_001_rr.jpgImage Enlarger

which will satisfy my bass GAS for a maple fretboard bass with the punk/funk, and then I can get on with getting an acoustic guitar.
