I don’t listen to reggae so i was unaware of that, when i think of a Gibson SG i think of She Said She Said , Hey Bulldog , AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Doctor Robert , The Doors, and Paperback Writer , so i think of it as a rock and metal instrument. Also, i don’t like PRS guitars, they’re too expensive and look unappealing to me.

I should correct that; apparently Marley’s main guitar was a Les Paul Special with P90’s, not an SG, but he did also use an SG. Peter Tosh’s guitarist also used one. Apparently Fender Telecasters are also in demand for reggae which is a little surprising but not really, it’s got a chunky sound for chord stabs.
I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe. This has been true for 2016 & 2017 but I may have to get more specific in the future.

I’m not too surprised, Telecasters are famous for their snappy and bright sound which is why they tend to be used in genres like Country and Indie rock.
Telecasters are probably my favourite electrics. They’re just great workhorses.

Yeah they’re fun little things (or clunky little things depending on the wood). I’d get one but its too much of a one-horse guitar and I’d have to throw some other weird pickups in it to make it more versatile. And after all, reggae is just a form of country music really except you can put wooshing sounds in it. G&L have their various versions of the Tele which are quite interesting and if I was interested, I’d probably get an ASAT Classic Bluesboy which has a humbucker at the neck.

If you guys could have any guitar in the world what would you have?I think I’d go with a mint condition 1959 Gibson Les Paul in a sunburst finish. The holy grail of guitars.
Honestly there is no one guitar that would be IT for me. Some guitars are great at one thing, some are versatile, I’m too much of a songwriter-head to get overly stuck on one sound. The guitar I’m paying off now I picked for general versatility and I’ll probably modify it to be even more versatile; after that I might look at a specialist guitar like the Tele or some crazy G&L thing like the Fallout.

Also here’s a fun test for you guys:
Let me know what you think. The test is done with both neck+bridge PU’s which I feel is a little tricky of Darren but it’s a great idea overall.

Fender Telecaster that George used on the Rooftop. That’s the most practical and beautiful guitar I’ve ever seen. Plus I play a blue Tele and I love the way that guitar plays.

I love Fender Stratocasters, so i’d probably choose a left handed 1960 Fender Stratocaster in Olympic white with rosewood fingerboard and synchronized tremolo as well as a modification that makes position 2 on the 3 way switch bridge and middle instead of just middle.

Not the Sonic Blue? I liked those old car colours, some interesting and unique choices.

Well Chris Wolstenholmes bass would set you back about £2595, so yep pretty cheap haha
I always struggle when it comes to Strat colours. I wouldn’t get white because I already have a Les Paul Custom in alpine white.
Sonic blue is pretty cool I guess.

Do what I did @Beatlebug, get a black bass and put rainbow dayglo strings on it:
That’s my Washburn XB125 with DR Neons on it. The pickups are a bit dark, one of these days I’ll put a couple of G&L MFD’s in it and it’ll really roar. But I also like Belair Green as a colour, but I’m resigned to my SG being Cherry Red. It’ll be the 2nd red guitar I own besides the weird red bass I have.

Thinking about string gauges, what gauges do you use, i personally use 11’s on both my acoustic and my Fender and yes i use electric strings on my acoustic. The reason i use such heavy strings is because i break strings quickly with lighter gauges and 11’s sure can last, even to the point where the strings are so old that the high E string has it’s intonation off by about a quarter step per octave which is not changed by adjusting the saddles but once you put new strings on, the problem will be fixed. As a side note, i recommend replacing all of your strings once one string breaks because that one string snapping is a call for help from the guitar to get fresh strings on it.

Everyone’s different, my hands aren’t the biggest and I found going to lighter strings on the bass and sticking to 9’s on guitar were the best compromise, particularly for vibrato. I use GHS pressurewounds on the bass, and the last set lasted me 2 years, they’re extremely hard-wearing and a nice fundamental without going too crazy like flatwounds. I’m fairly happy with D’addario for acoustic and electrics, I should experiment with different brands perhaps.

I’ve always used Ernie Ball Super Slinky strings – so .009, .011, .016, .024w, .032, .042.
They’re good balanced strings. I believe Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck use them

I believe you are correct. I use the Power Slinky strings (11s) on both my guitars, because I like them to be as uniform as possible. The 10s I found just a bit too jangly/bendy on my acoustic when I tried them, but I’m thinking of switching to 10s on electric, because David Gilmour uses them and, hand strength be damned, I literally can’t see myself doing his two-whole-step bends on my 11s. I can do some pretty mean one-and-a-half step bends though (not on high E, it’s too tight, but on G and B).
Despite having fairly dinky hands and wrists, I have improved my left-hand musculature substantially since beginning my mad guitar journey. Barre chords, man (not to mention crazy Gilmour bends and Matt Bellamy’s super-fast two-handed tapping on ‘Reapers’… this latter has been knocking me out lately. I keep working at it, though, because two of the lads in the band can play it and my ego demands I at least be on the same technical level as they. Competition is a great motivator!)
