AppleScruffJunior, I noticed that you claimed that Swiss people speak French, which is a lie. I also noticed that you claim Irish people speak Irish, which is also a lie. Irish people speak English, Swiss people speak Dutch, and you speak English.

Die Leute aus der Schweiz sprechen Franzoesisch, Deutsch und Italienisch. Niemand spricht Niederlaendisch.
Mais oui, les irlandais ne parlent pas la langue irlandaise? Comme j’ai déja dit, fais tes récherches avant tu fais tes postes ici.

I love how Yiddish was picked instead of Hebrew as the designated Middle East language. All Jews can speak a bit of Hebrew, few can speak Yiddish. Also there is quite a bit of antisemitism in the Arab world so I don’t think they’d take fondly to having to speak Jewish.

Considering almost everybody here is from the US and the few that aren’t are from the UK, it’s safe to assume everybody here speaks English and nothing else.
Wow. That’s a bit of an asinine thing to say, mate. I’m Dutch and there are several other Dutch people here. Dutch people speak Dutch (obviously), and most also speak English. The majority of us has learnt German and French in school as well.
But, that’s not the point. What a ridiculous thing to say, or even think, that we’re all American or British here. What you wrote there is one of the reasons so many people hate Yanks. Just saying.
Dutch:
Denmark
Sweden
Norway
Finland
Greenland
Iceland
Scandinavia
Holland
The Netherlands
Oy vey. Are you really that stupid?
Firstly: Holland is a part of the Netherlands, not a separate nation. And no, it’s not the same thing, either. Holland is just two provinces. The Netherlands has 10 more provinces that aren’t ‘Holland’.
Also: Scandinavia isn’t a country.
Lastly: Dutch is spoken in:
The Netherlands
Belgium
The Netherlands Antilles (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Saba, St. Eustatius, and St. Martin)
Suriname
And, if you want to be technical about it, South-Africa. Afrikaans was brought to South Africa by the Dutch, and is to this day very similar although it has developed differently.

I just wanted to show how much I hate having to go into Google translate and translate ASJ’s post that she wrote in 3 languages, so I did 3 nonsensical sentences, the first sentence in Spanish, the 2nd one in German, and the 3rd one by pressing random keys on my keyboard. Here’s a complimentary translation:

If you are unsure of gender, why not go from something neutral like they?
Maybe Holland borders the nation of Africa where they speak African.
Also, don’t use school as an excuse, you have the internet, you can research.

How difficult is it to learn German? I’m considering taking it sometime, and I’m just curious.

I’m not @AppleScruffJunior but I found German to be relatively difficult. I first learnt the language in school when I was 12, although I did have German pen pals prior to that — my older sister would check my letters and correct them for me.
The main issue are the many grammatical cases you have to take into account. I was in hospital when those were taught, and I never managed to catch up on that. Also, German nouns are either male, female, or neutral. This affects the pronouns mostly, and it can be tricky for those whose language doesn’t have that distinction. E.g.:
the cat – die Katze (female)
the house – das Haus (neutral)
the footballer – der Fußballspieler (male)
Dutch does, so it wasn’t too difficult for me even though male and female nouns both get a ‘de’ pronoun, and the neutral pronoun is ‘het’. In my language, the distinction between male and female is a lot less visible than in German. Of course, the gender of words isn’t always the same in German as it is in Dutch either, so it’s easy to get wrong.
Anyway, I think it’s a fairly complicated language to learn, but not as difficult as French. Pronunciation should also be easier than, say, Dutch. If you want to, you should have a bash at it. It’s a nice language to know, and you’ll be able to carry a conversation quite well relatively quickly.

…..what if she is? Have you ever seen us online at the same time?
And as for @WeepingAtlasCedars German is a lovely language. The grammar is quite difficult as @Mademoiselle Kitty >^..^< pointed out. There are 16 different ways of saying ‘the’ in German depending on context- der, die, das, die, den, die, das, die, dem, der, dem, den, des, der, des, der (also if somebody says “you’re repeating the same ones over again”, I’m not it’s the grammatical cases). You also have different ways of saying mine (mich/mir) yours (dich/dir) etc. depending on the context.
The grammar is complicated but once you get ‘it’, you have it forever. You might feel overwhelmed at the beginning but if you ever meet some Germans, they’re always very impressed that you can speak German even if it is at a beginner’s level. Once you have grammar sorted it’s just continuous practice and vocab building.
From a job perspective- German is very employable. The Germans like to conduct business through German, and the demand is ridiculously high for bilingual German-English speakers (particularly in western Europe if you ever want to move to UK/Ireland). I could leave college right now halfway through 1st year and probably got a job more or less immediately with my French and German at the standard it is now.
Americans find German difficult to pronounce (especially umlauts and ‘chen’ words) but with continuous listening to German videos/tv shows/dubbing on YouTube or wherever you’ll pick it up quickly enough.
In saying that I would recommend to pick it up, having a 2nd language is brilliant both for employability and for your brain (studies suggest it delays dementia if it’s in your genes), you also get to open up an entire new world to yourself full of fantastic literature, films and music!
And as I say to everyone who is learning German, French or even Irish (you get bonus points if you’re learning Irish in my books), I’m more than happy to speak the language with you over Skype or whatever.
As they say ‘Vorsprung Durch Technik Sprechen’
