I’m not AppleScruffJunior but I found German to be relatively difficult. I first learnt the language in school when I was 12, although I did have German pen pals prior to that — my older sister would check my letters and correct them for me.<more really helpful stuff here (thank you!)>
Anyway, I think it’s a fairly complicated language to learn, but not as difficult as French. Pronunciation should also be easier than, say, Dutch. If you want to, you should have a bash at it. It’s a nice language to know, and you’ll be able to carry a conversation quite well relatively quickly.
Okay! Thank you so much!
I had to take French in grades 4, 5 and 6 (if I’m remembering correctly) and it was really difficult. I think German should be easier for me to at least some degree because I’m actually quite interested in learning it, unlike French. Thanks much again!

From a job perspective- German is very employable. The Germans like to conduct business through German, and the demand is ridiculously high for bilingual German-English speakers (particularly in western Europe if you ever want to move to UK/Ireland). I could leave college right now halfway through 1st year and probably got a job more or less immediately with my French and German at the standard it is now.
That’s quite convenient, I’m thinking of moving somewhere over there in the future.
<even more! Thank you thank you thank you thank you!>
And as I say to everyone who is learning German, French or even Irish (you get bonus points if you’re learning Irish in my books), I’m more than happy to speak the language with you over Skype or whatever.
As they say ‘Vorsprung Durch
TechnikSprechen’
Again, thanks so very much! I’ll definitely consider the Skype thing.
Another thanks much to both of you! Your feedback and info really helped. I think I’ll try it out!

I was doing my daily Dutch practice a minute ago, and Duolingo’s factoid of the day popped up and I immediately thought of @AppleScruffJunior
To be fair if they are talking about people who speak Irish as a first language, you’re looking at couple of 00,000. Number of people who can speak it and speak it well, I’d say about 800,000. Number of people who say they speak it 1.7 million.
Irish is a complicated one.

I didn’t know you were learning Dutch, @The Hole Got Fixed! How is it going so far?
I may have mentioned it elsewhere on the forum before, I can’t remember.
It’s going fairly well, thank you! I’m not a stage where I can hold a conversation though. I only started on New Years Day
Ah, thanks for clearing that up @AppleScruffJunior. Though 00,000 speaking it as a first language? That’s not very many!

Blame planters from Britain who made it “speak English or lose your land and die” for the native Irish. Put in the Great Famine (or genocide whatever you would like to call it) where the wealthy English-speakers lived, and the poor Irish died, and it’s a wonder the language still exists today.
Also my 800,000 estimate is very liberal, I’d expect it in reality to be about 200,000-300,000.
If it wasn’t for colonisation Ireland could be a lovely bilingual country today similar to the Netherlands or Scandinavian countries where practically everyone speaks at least good English. Instead we’re left as one of the worst European countries for knowing more than one language.
