I’ve been in a kind of 90’s revival lately so i thought it would be great to have a The Flaming Lips’s thread as there are many other threads dedicated to other bands.
Also because they always sounded kinda Beatley to me, specially after they signed for Warner and evolved into more Pop song oriented songs.
Here are a couple of Flaming Lips Beatley moments:
"I Need You by George Harrison"

The Flaming Lips are a band i’ve been interested in recently given their Beatley/60s psychedelic sound. The only album i’m acquainted with is Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots though.
I’m looking to listen to more but its hard to know where to start given the size of their discography.
This is my favourite song by them so far:
"And life flows on within you and without you" - George Harrison

I like the album where they cover the entire Sgt Pepper album with friends.

Well, i’d recomend you to start by Clouds Taste Metallic that’s their 3rd album after the signed for a major label. It’s when they definitely adopted a more accessible and pop oriented style although their previous album has a friendly sound and flow as well.
Yoshimi battles etc is a great album. I love it, specially the tracks “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1“, and “In the Morning of the Magicians“…
I find their album Zaireeka super interesting. It is four separate discs that can be played separately or in groups of two, three, and four with multiple stereos. Amazing.
One thing that i like of them is that they alternate between nice and pop albums and more experimental stuff.

That’s their “With a Little Help from My Fwends” album. The video of Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds that i posted above is from that album.

Their “Finally The Punk Rockers Are Taking Acid!” double-CD collects their earliest (mid-to-late’80s) albums together and is fairly interesting, although a lot less polished than their later stuff.
I would guess their other most famous/acclaimed album aside from “Yoshimi” is “The Soft Bulletin”. I’ve still never heard either of those two…maybe I’ll get around to it someday…
GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

Almost right, Finally the Punk Rockers Are Taking Acid! is a triple-CD collecting together their first three albums and various bonus tracks. At around the same time they released the double-CD The Day They Shot a Hole in the Jesus Egg which had their fourth album coupled with the Mushroom Tapes bootleg and various other bonus material.
The track that got me into them properly was the wonderful, and very strange…
