I played Abbey Road today. I didn’t pick out my favorites. I didn’t work in non-Beatle music. No remixes. Abbey Road neat.
What do you plan to revisit in 2013?
Ad hoc, ad loc, and quid pro quo! So little time! So much to know!

It’s been a long time since I’ve listened to Magical Mystery Tour or Sgt. Pepper ‘s. Those would be a nice start to a Beatley new year.

Not Beatles, but every January I revisit the entire Beach Boys catalogue. It’s a painful ride, believe me. The Beach Boys are a prime example of talent squandered at every single opportunity. Their catalogue is a collection of beauty sullied by poor choices and an complete incapability to adapt to changing times. They’re the biggest cautionary tale in rock history.

Totally agree. I find them (and Pet Sounds) to be overrated, although I do think it’s a great album. Brian Wilson had some fantastic ideas for a spell there in the mid-60s, but his inner demons and the rest of the band’s cluelessness doomed them. They have a few great albums and some excellent singles, but overall they’re pretty s**t. After 1971 or so it’s unlistenable. But Summer Days (And Summer Nights), Pet Sounds, Wild Honey, and Smiley Smile are good albums.

I could only listen to The Beach Boys during the summer. They’re not the best band, but they had some nice songs in the 60s. For 2013, I would like to revisit Ringo’s solo work. Recently, he has been releasing solo albums in January so my brain got used to hearing him almost constantly during the beginning of the year.

While I don’t quite agree with the word “overrated”, I very sadly have to agree with the word “cluelessness”.
There was so much potential in that band, but unfortunately the Beach Boys never managed to become “cool” in any way. Mike Love was just terminally unhip and practically insisted the band never grow beyond the goodtime-sunshine image of their past. After 1966 Dennis and (to some extent) Carl injected a little bit of scruffy R&B into the mix, but otherwise their 1967-1980 album output is mostly a lesson on how to become irrelevant while musical trends fly right by.
That being said, there are a lot of excellent individual tracks in there, as well as a few albums which have come to be appreciated over time (‘Sunflower’ and ‘Love You’ are the two biggest), but otherwise even as a big fan I have to admit that their only one consistent album was ‘Pet Sounds’.
