Crap, apologies! I read that completely wrong. I read the last bit “that is in no way related to the Beatles?” as a response.
Huge apologies!

@meanmistermustard What is your favorite TV show and film that is in no way related to the Beatles?
Het @pennylaneisinmyears, nice to have you with us.
Favourite tv show? Growing up i loved the A-Team (few boys in the 80’s didn’t) and Columbo (tv detective played by Peter Falk) is fantastic.
Favourite film? Not that sure. Not really a film person. The latest Batman trilogy would have been up there if it wasn’t for the lousy American happy ever after finale.
What about yourself?

I got a lump in my throat when ‘Alfred’ having never given up hope finally sees his ‘adoptive son’ Bruce has survived and is happy. There’s no gushing hugs and American hi fives…. just a silent acknowledgment and a phlegmatic acceptance that there’s no place for Alfred anymore but that his job is done.
I’m getting that lump in my throat again.

It was yet another example of American films having to placate an audience who [they feel] are unable to handle a film that doesn’t end with the man and woman walking off together to live happily ever after (no money worries or arguments whilst spouting babies every couple of years who are perfect in every possible way).
Its as annoying as tv shows that finish up at the end of the series/season with all the loose ends neatly tied up. Tho to be fair when ‘The Fall’ season 2 didnt tie all the loose ends up people were complaining.

Orson Welles – “If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story.”
@Zig, can you spawn me a wish granting genie?

I know what you mean……But Christopher Nolan was born in London…..He directed and co-wrote the thing.
I bet you like Game of Thrones……

Doesnt mean he doesnt have to toiler it to meet the supposed demands of an American audience. One of Jane Austen’s books (‘Pride and Prejudice‘ after a google search) got filmed with a different ending for the US market as they must have felt the audience too dumb too handle the original and leave happy despite most presumably having read the book. The director was an Englishman called Joe Wright.

I do know what you mean and I can’t defend Joe Wright………But let’s not let our own pride and prejudices get in the way of giving credit where it’s due.
And I know this is down to taste …….But I must state that I think American drama has always been entertaining……And since Fred and Wilma appeared as the first married couple to share a double bed on American TV it has improved leaps and bounds in the grittiness stakes too. The best of American TV is now just as good as the best from the UK in all regards….except for Fox News…..Which I nevertheless enjoy.
TV must cater for all tastes and it does so on both sides of the pond…….You can’t get dumber than some British audiences and their noted preferences for short 2/3 minute scenes that don’t overtax concentration skills. Think of how ‘Eastenders’ jumps about……..But Eastenders can still grip you….Or used to I haven’t seen it for a while.
A personal gripe is that I don’t like what Hollywood does to history…….Think ‘Braveheart’……or that complete tripe ‘Patriot’ (but I blame Mel Gibson’s private agenda for those two and the lack of history teaching in the US and the UK that allowed him to get away with it).
A prime example of what I hate is a film released a few years back about how an American submarine captured an Enigma decoding machine that won the war when it was HMS Bulldog who captured it 2 years before the US even entered the war. Cinema goers now have Hollywood’s version of history firmly implanted……..
But we are guilty of this too….(I saw a film today oh boy..The English army had just won the war).
Recently ‘The Imitation Game’ took some dramatic liberties…….Great film though. Or going back further to ‘Zulu’ The character of the disorderly drunk who comes good and saves the day to be awarded a VC was in fact a tea-totaller with an impeccable service record……His family rightly walked out of the Premier…….Thanks to the film people today don’t know that there were more Englishmen fighting at Rork’s Drift than Welshmen……or that not one soldier died from a spear wound but dozens of Zulus died from bayonets…….So both ‘sides’ take liberties and we should take a pinch of salt with us to the movies.
But back to TV …….. I love many new American series……In my opinion they are well written……often graphic and well crafted. They are fit for purpose in that they entertain me.
We don’t always want happy endings and we don’t always get one……Think ‘BB’…….(Breaking Bad). Perhaps the best thing I’ve seen on telly ever.

British shows are have a much shorter season that American shows.
Like with House Of Cards UK is much nastier than House Of Cards US since The former is shorter so you don’t have to deal with the nastiness as long.

I’m not sure how the shameless pandering of a few money grubbing producers/directors reflects on the tastes of an entire nation. Hardly seems fair.
But on to more important things: what do you need a genie for @Starr Shine? ?
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

Love that song, @Ron Nasty ! Thanks.
@Starr Shine? , since you are the one who bestowed the genie spawning superpower upon me, it would not be polite of me to deny you a genie for yourself.
I present to you, Maladh, as her name means protection and shelter. I strongly advise you to utilize her virtues wisely. Even I don’t turn my back on her!

@Zig, how many of these [IPA’s] have you tried? http://www.thrillist.com/drink/nation/the-definitive-top-10-ipas-as-chosen-by-a-hopped-up-panel-of-beer-writers
Of the top 10, I have had the privilege of consuming…
2. Ballast Point Sculpin – When we first moved to PA, we found a neighborhood tavern less than a mile away that offered amazing sandwiches and flat bread pizzas along with an eclectic selection of bottled and draft beers. One thing they do is rotate out kegs of IPA’s. The Beer God (my name for him – he is the owner’s son-in-law and purveyor of perfect pints!) would order ones that you don’t normally see in the area. One night, he saw me walk in and immediately poured one of these for me. He promised I would love it. I swear I heard angels singing as the first sip danced on my tongue and skipped merrily down my throat. When that keg was kicked, I cried.
4. Bell’s Two Hearted Ale – I had to travel to Pittsburgh for training. On the first night, I decided to have dinner downstairs at the hotel bar. This was the only IPA on the beer menu. Lucky me. I was just going to have a nice dinner salad and a couple of beers and turn in early after making the four hour drive and sitting in a training class all afternoon. I ended up taking three of these beauties upstairs with me to my room after dinner. Zag is very understanding.
10. Lagunitas IPA – There is a small beer store in the area that features hundreds of varieties – kids in candy stores have nothing on me. I usually spend at least twenty minutes looking over the selections, reading labels, asking questions of the staff, etc… During one such visit, a gentleman walked purposely up to the cooler that had this one in it and grabbed a six pack without hesitation. Curious, I grabbed one too and enjoyed it that night. I keep hoping I run into that gentleman again so I can get his name for my Will.
I noticed there are two varieties in the Top 10 brewed by Sierra Nevada. While I never had those specific ales, I have had Sierra Nevada’s Pale Ale. No surprise they have two selections in the Top 10.
As for the rest of the Top 45, I’ve had…
23. Dogfish Head 60 Minute – Brewed in nearby Delaware and available in just about every beer store in the area. This is my “go to” whenever I can’t make up my mind. I have two in the fridge as I write this!
32. Deschutes Brewery Chasin’ Freshies – I’ve had a few different varieties brewed by these guys. There is not a bum in the lot.
34. Green Flash Le Freak – I met this delightful libation in the same restaurant we are going to tonight. Woo-hoo!!
36. Goose Island India Pale Ale – When we were in NYC last November, we had lunch in a delightful Irish Pub. All the staff were originally from Ireland and even they recommended this one. They were right.
Some honorable mentions that did not make the list but are near the top of mine…
Shipyard Monkey Fist IPA – One of many delicious brews put out by the Shipyard brewery in Maine. I used to work with a guy who worked there at one time. When I told him how much I enjoyed this one , he said in his thickest Down East Maine accent, “Ay-uh, ya like to chew ya bee-ah do ya?”.
Troegs Perpetual IPA – Made by Troegs Brewing Company in Hershey PA. I hear they make chocolate in Hershey as well. Who knew?
Flower Power IPA – This one is rapidly climbing the chart as a favorite of mine. Put forth by the Ithaca Beer Company in Ithaca NY – just a stone’s throw from prestigious Cornell University. This award winning IPA first came to my attention in an Inn down the road from us. A guy was drinking it and the label on the bottle looked cool. For kicks I bought some to take home with me. Whoever said “you can’t judge a book by the cover” is a fool.
Damn – this was just about ale. Don’t get me started on baseball!!!
