Yes!
I love all the early Mothers albums, but that one’s got a special level of fun to it, all those ugly voices popping in with wisecracks like MAD magazine or something. And the way he was editing tapes together and leaving the silences out of the album was something the Beatles were just getting round to. . Extraordinary album. (and year)

I have my issues with Freak Out! being very long and We’re Only in It for the Money having too little music. But Absolutely Free is just the right amount of zaniness (Soft-Sell Conclusion and Brown Shoes Don’t Make It) and actual talented musicianship shown on (Plastic People and Invocation and Ritual Dance of the Young Pumpkin). Also it’s probably his funniest record.

You will live a life and die at an age. You possess basic general personality traits and you are affected by the movements of the planets and stars in ways so complex, confusing, and made-up that you cannot even begin to understand them. Your Zodiac sign is known for starting with an O and having nine letters in it. It is also curiously absent from most zodiac posts.

I quite like the idea of Jesus reading his horoscope in a trashy publication of the time.

Wanna kill some time? What is your favorite non-Beatle album cover/covers?
I’ve been working on my top 10, I’ve been wanting to discuss this for some time now and and there is no cover art thread, I wanted to hear your opinions. lookin at you @QuarryMan @lovelyritametermaid @Beatlebug and anyone else reading.
Here’s my top (roughly)
Very iconic, funny and original. It just calls your eye from the first time you see it.
9) Tyler, the Creator – Igor (2019)Maybe I’m biased because it’s relatively new and I really like the music, but I just really love the color contrast and the rough-around-the-edges chopping, it complements the lo-fi aesthetic of the music and the characterisation of “Igor” himself.
8) Herbie Hancock – Head Hunters (1973)Usually the fusion pick tends to be Bitches Brew as the best cover art but I prefer this one. It’s just so groovy, it really embodies the feeling of the album, not to mention it is based upon the character of the song Watermelon Man, in reference to black people, also portrayed in the song using flutes imitating the sound of Pygmy music of Central Africa, tying around the entire African influence into African American electricity the album (and genre) has. And I love the sense of humour Herbie uses to treat what used to be an ugly stereotype. It’s such an important cover for the album’s musical standpoint.
7) Frank Zappa – Hot Rats (1969)Not only is it the best album of all time, but also has an amazing cover. When I found out the person in the cover isn’t Zappa himself I was like whaaaaaaaat. It was the babysitter of Frank’s first daughter. Well anyway the color palette is awesome. It almost feels tasty, don’t know how to describe itShould’ve been called “Pink Rats”.
6) Bob Dylan – Bringing It All Back Home (1965)Badass and sexy. He looks so menacing and focused. Also that weird bubble effect around him makes it so striking. And that woman in the background was just like a model put there to contrast, with her elegancy, Bob’s physical madness. I love it.
5) Elvis Presley – 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can’t Be Wrong (1959)The album itself is just your regular Elvis compilation, but the cover… I don’t know it’s just so funny and flashy and corny I’m amused by it. I’ve always liked it. It puts a smile on my face and Elvis was at his most charismatic and that suit is so 50s and so Vegas. Along with the title, it’s just one of the funniest most creative record presentations I’ve ever seen. They can’t indeed…!
4) Supertramp – Breakfast in America (1979)Putting aside that I love the record, the cover is a masterpiece. I’ve been listening to this album and regarding it as one of my favorites of the 70s for like a year now, and only like a month ago I noticed that the more you look at it, the more interesting it gets. Like the city in the background… that isn’t a city at all, or the fact that the lady in the cover is not just any lady but THE lady… It’s amazing how much I didn’t notice for so long. That is the sign of a good cover.
3) The Doors – The Doors (1967)Not only is the “the doors” logo bloody badass, but Jim Morrison’s face looks like a greek statue or something, it’s so weird and dark and epic. It represents the content of the album so well, I love it.
2) Tame Impala – Currents (2015)So classy. It is one of the most beautiful psychedelic drawings I’ve ever seen period. I don’t really like Tame Impala that much, and specially this album really let me down… mainly because it couldn’t live up to that unique album cover.
1) Pink Floyd – Animals (1977)I thought it was good… until I saw that pig. Now I can’t see anything else. Just the contrast between that funny balloon and the dark atmosphere of the factory is so… mechanical. It really sets a mood, and the album’s music doesn’t do anything more than play the part. It is so nicely framed and the colors are great. I love how gargantuan it appears to be with the tiny balloon floating right there. It feels… ironic.. and kind of scary. I don’t know, it’s just freaking fantastic.
Also, my favourite Beatles album covers are Sgt. Pepper , Rubber Soul and Abbey Road , in that order.

I really like your top 10 @Jules– very good picks you got there!
Here’s my (rough) top ten of my personal favorite non-Beatle album covers:
10)
Pink Floyd– More (1969)
I don’t really have a reason other than I like looking at it and I like the purply-blue and orange contrast and the pastoral yet psychedelic imagery that it brings
9)
Wings– Wildlife (1971)
Wildlife itself isn’t that strong of an album on its own, but the album art really takes the cake for me. It’s very earthy, and really connects to the album’s music’s vibes. Everyone looks great in this shot– especially Paul and Linda– and I just I love the sunshine and greenery.
8)
The Moody Blues– Days of Future Passed (1967)
Not only does this album basically invent the genre of prog rock, but it serves some looks as well. The art is just a gorgeous painting with so many gorgeous colors mingling together in a very flowy, psychedelic style with little details throughout that really connect it to the music inside.
7)
The Killers– Imploding the Mirage (2020)
This album actually hasn’t been released yet in its entirety (we’ve only gotten the singles “Caution” and “Fire and Bone” so far), but still that doesn’t mean I can’t admire its beautiful cover art! The painting style and colors are just so soft and everything is put beautifully together– it’s made in a way where the two figures made out of the clouds just feel real and like they’re actually moving through the sky.
6)
David Bowie — Aladdin Sane (1973)
Bowie being the gorgeous, weird man that he is– all the white and pale against Bowie’s bright orange hair and makeup really make him pop and seem otherworldly. David Bowie is just art personified, I think, too– which just really makes this whole cover wonderful to me.
5)
Pink Floyd– Obscured By Clouds (1972)
I don’t know why but I’m really into this cover– maybe because it’s just so simple but complex I guess? From a glance, it just looks like a bunch of random light and blurred colors, but the fact that you get the actual picture once you look more at it is interesting. I really have no clear-cut reason other than I find it aesthetically pleasing
4)
Paul McCartney — Chaos And Creation In The Backyard (2005)
Another album cover that I feel really connects to the music inside– just a peaceful and intimate candid photograph of young Paul that I find aesthetically pleasing. I’m also attracted to its simplicity (no colors, no text– just Paul in his backyard with his guitar )
3)
Paul & Linda McCartney — Ram (1971)
Linda’s photography + crayons is great. Period. Another very fitting cover for the album itself– domestically rural and candid and just a bit wacky.
2)
Pink Floyd– The Piper At The Gates of Dawn (1967)
yep.
1)
David Bowie– The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars (1972)
This album is great, the cover art is great and iconic and I just really love it for unexplainable reasons– period.
Sorry I’m kind of bad at explaining why I love things but yeah there it is– also you didn’t say anything about solo Beatles album covers soooooo
Oh, and my Beatles album covers top 5:
1) Revolver 2) Rubber Soul 3) Sgt. Pepper ‘s 4) Abbey Road 5) Beatles For Sale
