Why do people always say that religion is bad because others have done awful things in the name of religion, but nobody ever talks about how people have just the same done good things in the name of religion? Somebody doing something, good or bad, in the name of religion does not define religion’s worth. Religion is a tool that people are free to do what they want with. Just think of a hammer, for a more palpable example. It can be used to build shelters, but it can also be used to destroy them. This doesn’t makes the hammer bad nor does it make the hammer good. To abolish hammers because of how people misuse them neglects the true problem and displaces the blame by putting it on the hammer.

This thread has been dead for a while, so I’ll ask a new one.
If you were offered the opportunity to be an astronaut and were positive that you’d be able to (i.e. wouldn’t lose job or income, wouldn’t destroy life back home), would you do it? Why or why not?

I think so. I like travelling — it puts home in perspective — so imagine how much perspective I’d gain from leaving Earth altogether. Besides, I could sing ‘Space Oddity’ and feel very apropos.
And then I’d come home and kiss the ground like a proper hippie, of course.

I would not. Sounds scary, and I would much rather travel Earth than travel the solar system in a space ship. Seems like a waste of time and resources to me.

I’m sure there are those who said the same to Christopher Columbus. And look where you are now. Without Christopher Columbus, or someone like him, and those that followed him, you wouldn’t exist.
Just something to think about.

I’d do it, just for that view of the planet. Doing new things is always good, even if you can’t immediately see the justification. We’ve certainly benefited more from space research than military spending.

As for answering the question myself:
I’m going to have to give an unsatisfying “I don’t know.” The part of me that loves science and thinks that it would be a really cool experience says “hell yes!.” But then I start thinking about the myriad ways that being in space messes with your body. There’s a reason that NASA only selects very healthy individuals to be astronauts.

As much as I love physics I would say ‘no’ immediately. It’s really a pity, I bet there’s so much to discover but I can’t even ride a Rollercoaster without getting a very funny feeling in my stomach and therefore, I don’t think a take-off together with Astronaut Martha would be a pleasure for anyone.
But great to see there are so many possible future Astronauts on the forum to secure the research.

Either that or every Pink Floyd album. Something like Atom Heart Mother or DSOTM would be amazing to listen to in space!

Eh, I don’t really think of Pink Floyd as space rock. Inner space, maybe (as corny as it sounds). But ‘Astronomy Domine’ would be pretty epic, I suppose. And definitely ATU… ‘Nothin’s gonna change my world….’

The difference is my trouble would not be on the take-off. The re-entry and subsequent crash landing in Kazakhstan would ensure my cookies of being tossed ever upward.
…or worse…
Let’s change my answer to a resounding “nope”.

Without You by Harry Nilsson at 150 plays. I’ve only been using the iTunes on my current computer since June-ish. I have no idea whet it was on my last computer, but I’m thinking it was probably I Will Survive.
