I think IP is related to the internet and not the device.

Can’t be, I was using a computer terminal* to look up IPs for different people and it came up with the same IP for one person, but a different one for another person.

*A terminal is used to navigate a computer without a Graphic Interface.

From wiki

An Internet Protocol address (IP address) is a numerical label assigned to each device (e.g., computer, printer) participating in a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication

So maybe we are both right.

Afraid you were wrong, @Starr Shine?. Every device has a unique IP address. This is how, for instance, were you using one of several computers in a library, they can tell exactly which one was used.

Think of it as your door number. Your postcode (zipcode) says roughly where you are, so you can take that as the network identification, while the door number identifies the device being used. That is why many people use proxies in an attempt to disguise the device (and their ownership of/access to the device in question).

Because each of the computers would have a different IP address. The network address gives the location where a device is used, the IP address identifies the exact device individual device being used. So, if for example, you are on here using a laptop or phone, each will have a unique IP address, above that will be the network address you use, which could be different for each one – your laptop may be connecting using a fixed connection, which would be the network address, while your phone might be connecting using a mobile network.

If you were using a laptop in a different location (sitting in a coffee shop maybe, and using their wi-fi), it would give a different network address, but the IP address of would stay the same. The IP address is the door number of that laptop, and that laptop alone; or that phone, and that phone alone; etc.

The only time a question can arise is if a device is shared, such as a library computer, but then they would look at any log-in details used at the time they were interested in to narrow it down to an individual.

Then I’d give myself eternal life and unlimited money.
