Now for some general questions.
Would a one string bass work?
And would a three string guitar work?

It would be pretty pointless but sure.
Maybe if you only had three fingers.

Aye, ’tis called a wash-tub bass. The Quarrymen started out with one.

It’s called a tea chest bass in the Quarry Men context, although I’m being pedantic for the sake of it.

I typed ‘tea chest bass’ to begin with, but then I thought clicking a link that said ‘tea chest bass’ and going to a page that said ‘wash tub bass’ would be confusing so I changed it.
And I’m a grammar-Nazi so I’m cool with pedantic.

According to Joe’s 22 June 1957 page, Live: Rosebery Street, Liverpool page, Quarrymen was one word, not two.
The Quarrymen’s official website has it as one word also.

Sometimes it was written as two words, other times as one. Bill Smith (original Quarrymen tea-chest basserist man) says he thought up the name, and he has no idea which spelling it was. ‘I never visualised it written down,’ he says.
Also:
Mark Lewisohn writes it as Quarry Men in his book but in this case, it doesn’t really matter as the band didn’t really care how you spelt/spelled it.
And again, I am arguing for the sake of it!

It’ll always be two words to me, simply because that’s the way it was written out the first time I read it in a John Lennon biography in fifth grade.

(Shoving the thread back on topic just because I am curious and why not) Do you spell ‘Quarry Men’ or ‘Quarrymen’– two words, or one?
I think I’d do one word.
