That makes for an interesting question for the class,
Do you have a particular voice that you read certain users posts in and if so, what voice for what poster?

I have a question: what the hey is it with Americans and accents? What’s the obsession with people who don’t sound like you (ie the non-American part of the world)? What does investigating that mean for an American? I’ve never understood this and have never heard a satisfactory explanation!
I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe. This has been true for 2016 & 2017 but I may have to get more specific in the future.

I’m not sure what you mean, to be honest. I’ve never noticed an obsession, but maybe I just haven’t because I’m an American and am used to it.
Every American I’ve met over my life makes some comment about accents, either mine or non-American accents in general. There seems to be something culture-wide about it, is it a proxy for class consciousness? or good old parochialism or a combination? – these things I can understand in an American context. But then you all seem to apply it to outsiders, as if you’re trying to figure out the key to our cultural personalities by accent. Surely other non-Americans have noticed this? Just thought it was an appropriate point in the thread to get some answers 😀

I think it’s like how Americans are like “Hey! I’m 1/2 Italian and a 1/4 Japanese!” We are intrested in where people are from and the greater world just in different ways than other nations.

I’m afraid I don’t understand…
I always thought it was just me and accents. I like accents, the way they sound, and being able to twist my tongue into different ways of saying things has always been fun for me– it’s almost like learning a different language, I suppose, only you don’t have to learn (much) new vocabulary or grammar rules.
I don’t think anyone I’ve met (i.e. other Americans) were ‘obsessed’ with accents. It was generally me shouting about them Liverpool lads’ way of talking while they just sat by and nodded patiently and waited for the storm to pass.

American here – that is a great question. I never fully understood why someone would obsess over a non-American accent, either verbally or in the written word.
As for accents within the States, it’s interesting to me how each region, state, even city can have such different accents. Take New York for example. The state itself features many different accents. I was raised in the Capital District of New York (Albany/Troy/Schenectady) and there is a distinct accent in that region. If you were to travel west from there, you might come across a few more distinct accents – I know people who are from the Syracuse area that speak with a different accent than mine but we would both be considered “Upstate”. Then, you get into New York City itself which is essentially made up of 5 different boroughs – Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island – and each of them has their own distinct accent.
While I find this fascinating – trying to determine where folks are from – I have no interest in emulating any of them to the point where it borders on obsessive.

I think there’s also a tendency among some Americans to view an “American accent” as not an accent. Like, when a British actor puts on an American accent for a movie, a question he will inevitably get asked is “Was it hard to lose your accent?,” when, in fact, he didn’t lose an accent, but, rather, put one on.
Zig pretty much said what I was going to say. Like many other countries on earth, America has multiple accents within it’s borders, which makes me hesitant to type the words “American accent” like there’s just one. As for me, I speak with a slight Chicago accent. If you don’t know what that is, look under the spoiler and watch the video starting at the 0:50 mark.
“The Regular Guy” is a radio personality on the Chicago area station 93 WXRT (“Chicago’s Finest Rock”) who reviews movies in an exaggerated Chicago accent.

I always think my voice is rather boring and monotone, but then that’s just how I hear it.
How others hear a voice is always a better assessment. @Ahhh Girl spent a couple of weeks being bored and monotoned by it, so what does she think?
(btw Her voice is quite Southern US and much younger than I expected before she first rang me.)

As to RN’s voice, see my comment in post 2150.
My ears just like those Brit male voices.
Zig, I had to get used to my GPS guy telling me to take the slip road.

I’ve had Yankees say that I don’t have a southern accent. Interesting that RN thinks I do.
There were several British men at the conference I was at last week. Happy ears.

Perhaps you had a bit of an accent when you were talking to RN, but you didn’t when you were talking to the Yankees. T’is quite possible– I’m always influenced by who I’m talking to.
Or RN is more observant than the Yankees were. I always notice people’s accents, but my mum doesn’t. Different ears, y’know.
