Offline On what would have been his 99th birthday, the Bank of England have issued the new £50 note…
…featuring Alan Turing, the Nazi codebreaker who helped the Allies win WWII, and one of the pioneers of computers, to the degree that “The Turing Test/Law” on whether Artificial Intelligence has been achieved is still the go-to test after more than half a century.
Because he was gay, such an important man in the course of human history, was persecuted by the British state, eventually leading to his suicide, with his contrbutions swept under the carpet for many decades (he wasn’t mentioned when I was taught the history of WWII in the ’70s).
His breaking of then-laws regarding homosexuality in the 1950s were pardoned by Queen Elizabeth II in 2013, and now he’s on a banknote.
It is good to see him being recognised for his many achievements, rather than being condemned and forgotten because of his sexuality, which has nothing to do with nothing.
RIP Alan Turing, and happy 99th birthday, knowing the country of your birth has changed.
