Thanks Purplish Rain (like that pic — Fred Armisen did a phenomenal impression of Prince, and Maya Rudolph as his assistant was priceless):
I’m on an extended project to expand my musical horizons, and I’m always looking for new names of musicians & bands (new to me, that is) to sample. Part of my project is to at least give some of these a chance — listen to a few songs — even if I have had a bias against them without really giving them a chance before. Mostly they are names I’ve heard for years but never bothered to give a listen (I used to be quite snobby and think “I don’t need to listen to that”). Bowie and Tom Petty I already appreciate, as well as Michael Jackson. But all the other names I will add to my list for sure.

Yeah, Prince was almost certainly my favourite “big” 80s artist, the only one whose work sustained my interest throughout the decade.
My other 80s faves were largely semi-underground rockers who didn’t have a lot of commercial impact, particularly the Minutemen, Butthole Surfers, Replacements and Husker Du.
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

If you want to know what Def Leppard is all about just listen to Pour Some Sugar On Me. I love that song.
And @PurplishRain left off Van Halen from the list, my personal favorite 80s band.

OMG how could I forget Van Halen! one of the greatest six-pack of albums of alltime! I guess kinda subconsciously I think of them as more of a 70s-straddling-80s band. Also, I’ve liked none of the humourless Van Hagar stuff I’ve heard.
GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

I’m not personally big on the 80s because classic rock died a death (deaths of Lennon, Bonham, Moon etc in the lead up and early years of the decade, split up of various bands, awful work from the Stones, Queen, Aerosmith etc) and was replaced by vomit worthy hair metal such as Bon Jovi (I can enjoy the odd song from these), Motley Crue, Cinderella, Poison etc.
That said, I do love the 80s indie rock scene. You had the jangle pop revival with The Smiths followed by a host of imitators who made some brilliant obscure tracks.
Some of my favourites –

I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.
