Recent song-kicks:
This random tune I found from a skateboarding video, of all things (I don’t watch them as a rule, but this one came highly recommended and it was very beautifully done – and I say this as someone who knows next to nothing about skateboarding or skateboarding videography, but I know beauty when I see it):
and also “The Millionaire Waltz” by Queen
and a couple songs by Stevie Nicks: “Outside The Rain” and “Nightbird”
and today:

Been listening to this on repeat every morning for a few days now. It was my first real introduction to Tom Petty, the one that got me hooked, but I’ve perhaps overlooked it since – until now. It being springtime, I’ve been in the mood for it.
Also been digging “Rooms On Fire” and “Sable On Blond” by Stevie Nicks.

Occasionally I discover a song that has a touch of WTF appearing and this is definitely one.
‘StopLight De-Lite’ by Lana Del Rey.
Seriously, it sounds like some weird pinball machine is having issues yet is so damn happy thru-out.

I’ve been on a lot of song kicks lately–I’ve actually developed a practice of making playlists every few months (something I never used to do). Today it appears to be Lazuli by Beach House, a band that’s perfect for yearning for new friends and missing old ones.

I have kept a running playlist of all my song-kicks for about a year and a half(?) now. It’s getting ridiculously long and I should probably make a new one (Song Kicks part II).

Was really digging “Great Day” from Flaming Pie recently. I didn’t know this before, but it hails from my favorite era of Macca – early-70’s messing-around-in-the-kitchen-on-the-farm-with-Linda-singing.

The way I do it is I split it into time periods, maybe every three or four months. That way I can give songs time to really establish themselves as long-term kicks. Sometimes songs don’t work with the others in the playlist, and I simply don’t include them. (Can’t you tell I’m way too analytical for my own good? )

Abandoned Love – Dylan, but probably a 60/40 split between the George and Dylan versions

I think Wah-Wah might be George’s best song. I’ve been looping it like a madman since last week when I remembered it existed and, unlike John, I’m not tired

Been obsessing on George’s album from ’78 “George Harrison ” and in particular Your Love Is Forever. What a gorgeous song – melody, lyrics and production.

Released in ’79, I believe. It’s one of my favorites as well. So mellow and Your Love Is Forever is one of his all-time great songs.
I’ve recently been on a kick of
“Scarborough Fair/Canticle” by Simon & Garfunkel
“Only A Broken Heart” by Tom Petty
“You And I Will Meet Again” by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

Two.
Lana Del Rey has some outstanding unreleased material but of those that have been, ‘Love Song’ is up there. It is such a beautiful recording.
The other is ‘The Only Exception’ by Paramore which has some insanely brilliant lyrics.

Absolutely loving the new single from Big Thief, definitely one of the best folk rock bands going today. This song is a bit more psychedelic than others they’ve released, but I think it’s wonderful, a woozy, dreamy dopamine rush of a song. Despite being almost six minutes, it feels like three.

RichardI've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.
