In an album of no bad tracks, ranking songs are painful. It’s almost the same as ranking all the songs on “Revolver ” and “Highway 61 Revisited”.

I live Highway 61 but for me Blood On The Tracks is the perfect album. I could give or take From A Buick 6 but BOtT is flawless.

I would actually vote for Tombstone Blues as the lesser one. But again, of course, no trully bad tracks, I agree.

Hmmm, I always thought ‘Meet Me In The Morning’ was the obvious weak link on BOtT. It’s a cool song, but to go from the lush romanticism of the other songs to a very dead-on blues song really messes up the tone of the album IMO.

he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

“Blood on the Tracks” is one of Dylan’s most hit-or-miss albums, honestly. You’ve got some marvels of music: “Tangled up in Blue”, “Idiot Wind”, “Buckets of Rain ” and the like. However some of the tracks also take away from the overall tone quite a bit, dragging the whole album down. Examples include: “Meet Me In the Morning” and “Simple Twist of Fate”.

I honestly think that “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blue” is the weakest track on the album, completely overshadowed by the title track and “Desolation Row”.
Song I’m hooked on currently:

Randomly heard this in a Muse live deep cuts compilation last night and omg
I was like “what is this spaghetti western sounding thing I love it” so with a little help from commenters, I found this:
and then I was like “wow this is a 1969 synthy sounding thing” (and then I heard Muse’s original studio cover and it sounded like 1980’s video game music lmao).
Anyway, the live Muse version tickles my fancy the most, it’s very Spaghettish.

I obviously agree with you that ‘Meet Me In the Morning’ takes away from the tone, but I cannot understand why you’d think the same of ‘Simple Twist of Fate’. The simple guitar strumming, quiet bass in the background, emotional – if smokescreen – lyrics depicting the end of a relationship – the whole thing is quintessential Blood on the Tracks. It may not be as big and bold as ‘Idiot Wind’ or ‘Tangled Up in Blue’, but it’s definitely in a very similar style to ‘Shelter From the Storm’ and ‘Buckets of Rain ‘, themselves my two favourite tracks, along with ‘You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go’.

Simple Twist of Fate is probably my favourite track on Blood on the Tracks, tied maybe with Shelter from the Storm. Although I should give a listen to that album again as it’s been a long time since I’ve listened to it all the way through

You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go is probably my favorite, but hearing take 1 of You’re A Big Girl Now really changed my view on the whole album. One of the greatest lyrics and vocal deliveries of all time. BOtT is Fylan at the height of his powers, having come full circle from going electric, his time with the band, his country phase, and finally returns to classic folk songwriting and he’s a full blown master. Every second of the album is perfect. The bass playing is terrific and subtle throughout, a lot of credit goes to Tony Brown. Its my favorite Dylan album and one of three albums including Pet Sounds and Revolver where the quality never dips a single time throughout the whole record.
Oh yeah Meet Me In The Morning is a banger I’m gonna listen to it right now

I think ‘Lonesome’ is my favourite from the album, too. The way he weaves the words together is so brilliant.
Situations have ended sad
Relationships have all been bad
Mine have been like Verlaine’s and Rimbaud
But there’s no way I can compare
All them scenes to this affair
You’re gonna make me lonesome when you go
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.

I just heard this song for the first time and was deeply haunted by it from the instant it hit my ears, and it only haunts me more the more I listen to it. I’m pretty sure I knew this song very personally at some point in a previous incarnation.
