Definitely. It is important to distinguish between “smooth jazz” (your Kenny Gs and whatnot, aka muzak) and jazz that happens to be smooth (your Chet Bakers, Kind of Blues, Adderleys etc).

Beatlebug, vonbonteeI've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

To be fair, I did describe it as “jazzy music” and not “jazz.”
Besides, it was a joke.

A lot of stuff is jazz that doesn’t sound like the standards that we all associate the word with. Along with all of the different flavors and schools of jazz, the music of Cream and Grateful Dead and bands like them can also be considered a type of jazz even though they incorporate other elements

Currently on a kick with Bessie Smith’s “Take Me For A Buggy Ride”. Something about Smith’s low, growling, falsetto just rings it just nice for me. Her vibrato is really impressive on this track as well, the grit as well.

Should have mentioned this yesterday, but I can’t get enough of this song. (The fact that it has astrology in it doesn’t hurt )

Woke up with this song in my head and I can’t get enough of it. The vocals send all kinds of chills down my spine.

Here Comes Your Man by the Pixies. The opening chord before the song starts always reminds me of AHDN 🙂

‘Graceland’ – Paul Simon (also the rest of the album, but the slide lick over the minor chord in this one really makes it stand out for me)

I’ve had ‘New Killer Star’ in my head all day because my hair decided to be Reality-era Bowie after I washed it this morning, so I listened to a couple versions of it before I went on a train trip to a city that had ‘all the corners of the buildings… the sidewalks and trees’ and so my wizard-friend and I kept singing those lines whilst we drooled over the architecture and it just kept getting more and more stuck in my head. Every Now And Then my mind would automatically switch to the next track, ‘Pablo Picasso’, but sooner or later we’d come back to the corners of the buildings and the cycle would start anew…
