I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

Yer So Bad – Tom Petty (1989)
Crazy coincidence. I’ve been way into this song lately as well. Singing it to myself all of the time.

I’d heard the BBC version of this track (itself very impressive) years ago, but I’ve been obsessed with this remarkable, thrilling performance for over a month now. (Poorly recorded and incomplete/stitched together though it may be.) The dynamics and crescendoes are a revelation: Beatles helping invent ’70s hardrock/punk over a decade early! The way they transform Elvis’ “If you ever say goodbye/If you ever even try” into “If you eversaygoodbye…CRASH CRASH!…If you evereventry…CRASH CRASH!” is breathtaking…and always with that slightly quizzical, unforgettable 5-note guitar hook…I wonder if that arrangement is original or if they took it from some earlier cover? Either way, GREAT performance; Ringo bashing away, practically bringing tears of joy to my eyes. (BBC performance was similarly tricky but more restrained, drumwise…impressive but not enough to make me sit right down and cry-hy-hy over the ignorant abuse Ringo’s drumming has been victim to over the years.)
I would have no problem putting this (NON-CANON!) performance in the top 4-5 Beatles hard rockers, up there with “Saw Her Standing” and “Helter Skelter ” and whatever else. (And if you give me a week, I might also include the Star Club’s similarly frenzied and drum-crescendoed version of “Besame Mucho “, and rant about how its world-music exoticism anticipates Led Zeppelin)

It’s been these two very different songs for the last few days. The Kinks song was just a distraction.
