Dunno how many folks here will care, but Don Van Vliet was a true genius and a madman whose records were some of my favourite ever. And even if he didn't record a note after 1982 and had no intention of ever doing so again, it's still sad. RIP.
FYI, John & Paul were big fans of Beefheart's '67 debut Safe As Milk (with its enclosed bumper sticker), John reportedly buying himself two copies:
GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

Thanks for the notes of sympathy, guys.
Gniknus, Trout Mask Replica is probably my third-or-fourth favoutite album ever, but I can TOTALLY empathise with folks who hear it and are horrified – just like I was, during my first half-dozen listenings. After which they become perversely fascinated at the daring-ness, then slowly aware of and impressed with the musicianship on display, then get accusotmed to it, then respectful, then come to like it, and finally love it. Which is a cliche, but a lot of folks have the same experience. And another cliche is that TMR is the wrong album to “start” with. So if you ever get curious again, Safe as Milk is where to begin. Here's “Electricity” (As far as I'm concerned, this is up there with “Tomorrow Never Knows .”)
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

I feel like my problem was that I listened to it before I was I ready for it or whatever because I didn’t spend much time with it. I listened to it probably 3 times, but my perceptions of music weren’t as open so I dismissed it because of how different it was. I’ll definitely give Safe as Milk a shot when I get to it, I don’t know when it will be on the great journey of music, but I’m positive it will happen.

Before I opened this thread I just knew it would be started by Von B.
I’ve only really heard Trout Mask Rep. I quite like it for what it represents, though I rarely play it. It’s nice when it comes on randomly through iTunes though – it always makes a refreshing change.
Many years ago, in my first graduate job, I used to work with a guy called Mike Barnes when he was writing a biography of Don Van Vliet. I believe it’s called Captain Beefheart: The Biography. He used to share a lot of stories about him – I can’t remember if he ever met/interviewed him, but clearly knew his stuff.

I didn’t remember that there had been other Beefheart references here. But I know you like unorthodox/experimental music, and figured if anyone here was a Beefheart fan it would likely be you.

The two previous Forum mentions (“Favourite Artists” or something similar) were mine-and-mine-alone. But Joseph Brush found something Beefheartian in “Dig A Pony “, and stated as much on that song's page.

I knew there was a Beefheart reference on a song page, I just couldn't put my finger on it
