Raphael Ravenscroft, the saxophonist on Gerry Rafferty’s “Baker Street” passed away at only 60. I post this not only because it was one of my favorite songs as a kid, but also because, according to Beatlefan, there were unconfirmed media reports of his being offered a position in Wings, which he turned down.

Wow, @parlance – I had no idea who the sax player was on that song. I had the 45 as a kid and still love it. I looked him up to see if he was in any way related to Thurl Ravenscroft but could not find any links to both. Interesting to read that he also played on sessions for Mary Hopkin – a slight Beatley reference.
Thank you, Raphael for one of the most vivid audio memories on the soundtrack of my youth.
RIP

And, for a Beatles connection, in the 60s, when he was Shane Fenton, he married Iris Caldwell. Caldwell was Rory Storm’s sister, and had dated both George and Paul (at different times – though she was also dating Frank Ifield when she was involved with Paul!). They divorced in the mid-70s.

Examiner reports on another connection with the Beatles
“Alvin Stardust, a British singer who, when known in his earlier days as Shane Fenton, shared bills with the Beatles and also came to their rescue with food, has died at age 72…
…Fenton appeared on bills with them at Royal Albert Hall and the Empire Theatre in Liverpool. It was at the Empire that Beatles manager Brian Epstein offered Fenton an opportunity to be his manager and also record the Lennon-McCartney song “Do You Want To Know A Secret .” According to Harry, Fenton turned the offer down because he already had a manager.”

Jack Bruce, fantastic bassist and lead singer/songwriter in Cream, has sadly passed away today. May he rest in peace.

I’ve just been getting into Cream and think his basslines and vocals were amazing. That’s very sad…
RIP Jack

Not long after discovering the Beatles, I heard Born Under A Bad Sign and was blown away by how tight the bassline was. I haven’t listened to Cream properly in a long time, but they were a bloody brilliant group… and that was partly down to Bruce. I feel I’ll be revisiting some of those old songs later this evening.

Ringo’s tribute:
Jack Bruce was an incredible musician, great songwriter and it was my pleasure not only to listen to the bands he was in, including Cream, but to also have him in the All Starrs. He will be missed. We send Margrit and his family Peace & Love. Ringo & Barbara

Jack Bruce was very underrated. People always discuss Clapton or Ginger when talking Cream, understandably, but Bruce was really a unsung hero within that band. His bass playing really complimented Cream well, and he was a hell of a singer to boot.

I just heard of his passing this morning.
One of the best, if not THE best singing bass players in rock history. From what I have heard, he was also very instrumental in urging Eric Clapton to participate more in the “front man” role.
RIP Jack. You will definitely be missed.

I know this is an animal but it’s still heart wrenching :/
My family used to babysit an Irish Water Spaniel called Jim while his owners were away on holidays. He was a very well trained dog who (if you stretched out your hand) would put his paw on it so you could shake- a very sweet and friendly fellow he was. About two years ago he started getting seizures which is common in IWSs and is caused by a plethora of problems but his owners got medication for him and he was only having fits every now and again.
Last Wednesday, he went missing and his owner went out searching for him. They found him knotted in brambles having a seizure and obviously in pain so they decided to put him down. The last thing he did before he died was look up at his owners and put out his paw so they could shake his hand

Thats horrible and heart-breaking. Poor Jim. Losing a family pet is dreadful and in such a way as that is worse. Condolences ASJ to all concerned.
I don’t know what i would do if i found my dog in such a state.
