Leslie West, Mountain Guitarist Who Belted ‘Mississippi Queen,’ Dead at 75

Leslie West, the towering guitarist who created the hard-rock milestone “Mississippi Queen” with his band Mountain, died Wednesday morning. West’s brother, Larry West Weinstein, confirmed the musician’s death to Rolling Stone. He was 75. The cause of death was cardiac arrest. On Monday, West was rushed to a hospital after suffering cardiac arrest at his home near Daytona, Florida, where he never regained consciousness.

Released in 1970 on Mountain’s debut album, Climbing!, “Mississippi Queen” was two and a half minutes of boisterous bliss built around West’s burly yowl and guitar blasts and drummer Corky Laing’s completely unironic cowbell. One of those never-say-die songs of the classic-rock era, “Mississippi Queen” has been featured in countless soundtracks, TV shows (The AmericansThe Simpsons) and in Guitar Hero III. In an interview with Guitar Player earlier this year, West said the song “has just everything you need to make it a winner. You’ve got the cowbell, the riff is pretty damn good, and it sounds incredible. It feels like it wants to jump out of your car radio. To me, it sounds like a big, thick milkshake. It’s rich and chocolatey. Who doesn’t love that?”

A contemporary of Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jimi Hendrix, West was respected for his versatile playing (from fingerpicking to metallic power chords) and was revered by a new generation of guitar players who followed. In 2011, Eddie Van Halen told Rolling Stone that West and Deep Purple’s Ritchie Blackmore were among his biggest influences: “Leslie West has this incredible tone in Mountain,” Van Halen said.

RIP Leslie West.

Man, it pisses me off how 20 years of that stupid SNL cowbell sketch has transformed a perfectly excellent percussion instrument into an inherently ” hilarious ” novelty object – the musical value of which certain smug people apparently can’t appreciate any way except “ironically”.  Like seriously: listen to Corky Laing’s sticks here (or on “Mississippi Queen” itself) here end tell me that the almighty cowbell is a joke!:

RIP Leslie West

While we’re on the topic of peevy music things, I do kind of regret quoting a couple paragraphs that make it sound like Mississippi Queen is the only Mountain song that exists. I just couldn’t quote the whole article because it was too long. I probably should have just chosen a different article, but it would probably be more of the same.

Leslie rocked. Now everyone wants P90’s so they can pretend they’re Leslie, so he had the last laugh there. And cowbells were good enough for Led Zeppelin so that’s going to come around too, you’ll see. I’m going to watch that whole Woodstock thing now.

I remember this one Guitar World article (when I read that magazine) where he was talking about recording Theme for an Imaginary Western

that article taught me how to figure out the relative minor of a major key, and how to use a minor pentatonic scale in that setting

that was the first sort of theory I’d ever really learned, and it made a big impact on my own playing

RIP

So sad to hear about DOOM, he wasn’t even 50. His work will only grow in stature.

I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,

He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

I’ll just add that I only ran into MF Doom’s work through the amazing Rapp Snitch Knishes, which uses a sped-up loop of a sample of a cover of David Bowie’s Space Oddity which is so damn catchy it’ll give you ear worms along with one of the best raps you’ll ever hear:

Very sad to hear that Gerry and the Pacemakers frontman, and Merseybeat legend, Gerry Marsden, passed away today from a heart infection following a short illness. He was 78. Gerry and the Pacemakers were the first group to reach #1 in the UK with their first three singles (a feat not repeated until another Liverpool group, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, did the same over twenty years later), which included The Beatles-reject How Do You Do It . In Brian’s stable, Gerry and the Pacemakers probably ranked third after The Beatles and Cilla Black.

Gerry-Marsden.jpgImage Enlarger

With a distinctive voice, he worked best as a balladeer, and the title song from their film, Ferry Cross the Mersey, became an anthem for the city, while their version of You’ll Never Walk Alone from the musical Carousel became the anthem of Liverpool Football Club, and later the Hillsborough campaign (which saw him re-record it to raise funds to get justice for the 96 with other Liverpudlians including Paul).

Gerry was an integral part of the city, part of its heartbeat, and the city will mourn his loss.

Funny you should ask, according to this story, he’s a true mystery:

Probably a private joke between Doom and a friend to have a laugh at people trying to figure out who the mystery guy is and now we’ll probably never know.

Well, this is one of the trickier to know how to approach, musical genius, but very flawed human being, Phil Spector, has died aged 81.

The importance of his work cannot be ignored, nor his associations with The Beatles – together and solo (for good or ill); but his long history of domestic violence and sexual abuse, his psychotic episodes, and his conviction for the murder of Lana Clarkson (RIP), makes it difficult to feel too sad.

I won’t even give him a picture.

At his best he gave the world some great gifts; at his worst he took and destroyed lives.
