I’m shocked and utterly heartbroken. Astrid has always been one of my favourite photographers, and her photographs of the Beatles are among my absolute favourites of the band. Rest in peace.

While taking some time to gaze at pictures of Astrid and the Beatles just now, I am having a good, proper cry. I never knew her in person, but i know her in shared Beatle-love spirit.
The screen is blurry though the tears. I’m glad I have you all to share this with.

Pattie Boyd has tweeted:
We lose another piece of the story with Astrid’s passing. Her images are truly iconic and she was a great friend to the boys. George, in particular, was very fond of her. RIP Astrid. p

The New York Times has reported that Astrid was another in the Beatles story that we lost to cancer:
The cause was cancer, said Chris Murray, who presented Ms. Kirchherr’s first American exhibition at the Govinda Gallery in Washington in 1994.
Great article, well worth reading.
I will point out there is still some confusion over whether she died on Tuesday or Wednesday. Not important in the scheme of things, and it’ll be sorted out for the history books. ML said Wednesday in his post breaking the news, but the date I saw reported was the 12th, which was Tuesday. Most stories, based on ML’s twitter post go for Wednesday, but a significant amount (including the New York Times) of articles say it was Tuesday.
I like this quote from 2005 in New York Times article about how she didn’t make the money from her photographs she could have but didn’t regret it:
I’m a very, very silly girl. I just had the joy of taking pictures, and I never cared about my negatives. I just gave them away whenever anybody asked for them. I never cared about the money so much, because it was such a joy meeting them and becoming very close friends with them.
They gave me so much in return, as far as love and affection was concerned. They always cared about me and looked after me.

I just told my girlfriend that Astrid Kirchherr passed away a couple of days ago. She thought I said Ashton Kutcher. Such is the life of a Beatle Fan
When I first heard about her passing I posted this “[Astrid’s] influence on pop culture and fashion is way underrated. Damn fine photographer too

That speaks volumes about Astrid and them, as shown by the outpouring of love for her by even their children. I’m not surprised we haven’t heard from Paul yet, knowing her since he was 18, 60 years, difficult not to think he’s heartbroken and waiting for the right words to express his grief. Probably his biggest personal loss since George.
Agreed, as his father used to say “It’s just the way you’re made, son”. Apart from being a stylistic influence, people like Astrid and Klaus were important just for their friendship, generosity and openness. I think that had a big impact on those young men who’d barely been anywhere outside their country let alone their culture, and we are in turn indebted to that generosity of spirit for the personal growth it kindled. To have found someone as extraordinary as Astrid was such a lucky break and that has been passed on to us and will remain important as the people themselves pass on. We’ll never forget you Astrid, bon voyage.

Very nice article from Vogue on her influence on them stylistically, and via them on the rest of the world.

Paul tweeted about Astrid this morning:
Very sad news this week about Astrid Kirchherr. Astrid was a dear friend from my Hamburg days with The Beatles. Another friend, Klaus Voormann, told me she had passed away and this brought back memories of our days in the clubs in Hamburg.
She had a great sense of humour and later went on to marry Stuart our bass player. I have so many fond memories of our time together in the club or her home or a trip to the nearby seaside resort, Lübeck.
So sad for all of us who were her friends to lose such a lovely lady from our lives. I will miss her but will always remember her and her cheeky grin with great fondness. God bless you Astrid, see ya love! – Paul McCartney
His tweet was accompanied by these two photographs:
I’ll ignore the glaring error in his tweet about her and Stuart…

Just discovered that I missed a couple of Paul’s tweets which I found on his Facebook post, and it gives it in proper paragraphs:
Very sad news this week about Astrid Kirchherr.
Astrid was a dear friend from my Hamburg days with The Beatles. Another friend, Klaus Voormann, told me she had passed away and this brought back memories of our days in the clubs in Hamburg. Astrid looked unique. She had a short blond haircut and wore a slim black, leather outfit which made her look like a funky pixie. She would come to the club with Klaus and another friend, Jürgen Vollmer, and the three of them made quite an impression on us four lads from Liverpool. Their wit and conversation was really stimulating and we fell in love with Astrid’s style.
Astrid took beautiful photographs of us. She used black and white film and achieved a stunning mood in her pictures that we all loved.
– Paul

Rest in peace Jimmy Cobb (1929-2020), American jazz drummer who played on the landmark Kind of Blue LP in 1959 and worked with a host of other legends through his career, including Sarah Vaughan, John Coltrane, Dizzie Gillespie and Cannonball Adderley.

Damn. Rest in beats, Mr. Cobb
I didn’t know he was even still with us. 91 is a pretty good age, I guess, considering the difficult life of a jazz musician.
