Sad to hear of the loss of Gang of Four guitarist Andy Gill, aged 64. In his work with the band and also as a producer for many notable artists such as the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and the Futureheads, he consistently presented an uncompromising dedication to his art and a deep love for many different kinds of music.

Shocked to hear of the suicide of UK TV presenter Caroline Flack at the age of 40.
She has had her troubles in recent months, being charged with assaulting her boyfriend and having to step back from presenting work, including her main job as presenter of Love Island, it seems she was struggling more than was realised. Such a sad ending.
RIP Caroline Louise Flack (9 November 1979–15 February 2020).

Very sad to hear of the death of DJ, remixer and record producer Andrew Weatherall from a pulmonary embolism aged just 56.
His was the sound of the early ’90s UK Indie/dance crossover scene, as important as Madchester and Britpop was to that era, so was Weatherall.
Though he was gaining a reputation, he made his name when he was given an advance copy of a Primal Scream tune, I’m Losing More Than I’ll Ever Have…
…and given £500 to remix it and promote it as part of his DJ nights. His remix left little of the original, changed the sound and direction of Primal Scream, and renamed Loaded, became an anthem for a generation…
He then went on to produce their next album, Screamadelica, which most polls named as the best album of 1991, and won the inaugural Mercury Music Prize in 1992. The nights we had dancing and doing things we shouldn’t with that as a soundtrack.
When my friend Mo was an early guest vocalist for St. Etienne (their original idea was for a revolving cast of lead vocalists, Mo was the second or third) on Only Love Can Break Your Heart, Andy’s was the best remix in my opinion…
Met him a few times here and there. He was a great guy who helped make a lot of great music greater.
RIP to cosmic traveller Andrew James Weatherall (6 April 1963-17 February 2020).
and Sir

Further to the news that M*A*S*H’s co-creator Gene Reynolds died on the 5th (which I forgot to post), Kellye Nakahara, the actor who played Nurse Kellye – who was in every season but never a ‘lead’ actor, died on the 16th.

Was saddened to hear of the death of computer scientist Larry Tesler on 16 February aged 74.
Yeah, I know, I’d never heard of him either, but he did wonderful things for us, and so his death is worth marking.
Working with Xerox and Apple in the course of his career, among the innovations he came up with for how computers work are some many of us use every day. Larry Tesler invented the functions “Cut/Copy/Paste” and “Find/Replace” among others we take for granted.
RIP Lawrence Gordon Tesler (24 April 1945-16 February 2020).

One of the last surviving actors from the silent film era just died.
Diana Serra Cary, the child silent film star known by the nickname Baby Peggy, died on Monday in Gustine, Calif. She was 101.
Born on October 29, 1918 as Peggy Jean Montgomery, Cary began her career in the film industry at the early age of 19 months. During a visit with her mother and a friend to Century Film Studio in Hollywood, director Fred Fishbach became impressed with Peggy’s well-mannered behavior that led to her co-starring in short films. She soon began starring in her own series of films, becoming a major Hollywood celebrity and appearing in more than 100 shorts. She starred in a short film as “Little Red Riding Hood” in 1922 and in “Hansel and Gretel” in 1923. She starred in five feature-length films including “Captain January” in 1924 that was later remade as a musical starring Shirley Temple.
Her father, Jack Montgomery, was a cowboy who worked as a stuntman and an extra in cowboy films. In 1924, Montgomery got into a pay dispute with producer Sol Lesser that ended Cary’s contract which also ended the young actress’ career. Around the same time her grandfather stole all of the family’s earnings, leaving them broke. The family gained back their fortune after touring the country for several years in the late 1920s, but hard times arose again with the Great Depression.
Several years after returning to Hollywood, Cary changed her name from Peggy to Diana, after actress Diana Wynyard, and began a career as a magazine writer and journalist. In 1975, she began her book-writing career with “The Hollywood Posse,” a novel about the real cowboys who worked in movies. Her autobiography, “What Ever Happened to Baby Peggy” was published in 1996 and she authored her last book, “The Drowning of the Moon,” when she was 99.
She is survived by her son, Mark Carey and granddaughter Stephanie Carey. Her husband of 48 years, Robert Carey, died in 2003.
“She was a strong woman with a good soul, and believed in truth and doing the right thing,” said Mark. ” She is now at peace.”
RIP
