Saddened to hear of the death of British singer, songwriter, actor, Kenny Lynch, in the early hours of this morning at the age of 81.
One of the few British black singers to break through in the UK in the ’60s, having Top 10 hits with Up on the Roof and You Can Never Stop Me Loving You in 1963.
He went on to write songs for Cilla Black, the Small Faces, and Linda Thorson, among others.
Lynch was among the support acts on The Beatles tour supporting Helen Shapiro. He tried writing with John and Paul but was frustrated by their inability to write or read music. When Helen Shapiro’s producer turned down the song John and Paul had written for her, Misery , Kenny recorded it – and took his place in Beatles history as the first artist to record a Lennon/McCartney song other than them themselves.
Years later he would also be among the celebrities who appeared on the cover of the Band On The Run album.
Despite all this, he was probably most famous in my family for crowning my mother Miss Bermondsey or something in 1962.
RIP Kenny Lynch OBE (18 March 1938 – 18 December 2019)
And Sir…

The BBC report that Neil Innes died suddenly yesterday in France aged 75.
Innes first rose to public prominence as co-founder (along with Vivian Stanshall) of the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. Paul produced their hit single I’m the Urban Spaceman, and the band would appear in Magical Mystery Tour performing Death Cab for Cutie. The Bonzos would also appear on both series of the British children’s comedy series Do Not Adjust Your Set – where he met future members of Monty Python, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin and Terry Gillium.
He experimented with various musical comedy bands after the Bonzos broke up, from the more serious The World (who had split up by the time their first album was released ) to the comedy supergroup GRIMMS (which included Mike McGear and the rest of the Scaffold among its members, as well as Ollie Halsall, the future Barry Wom).
Though more an associate member than full-blown member, Innes started working with Monty Python in the early 70s, going on to step in as a performer and writing songs and sketches for their final TV series when John Cleese dropped out.
With Python having its first retirement, Innes and Eric Idle went on to make Rutland Weekend Television, a pastiche of all the small and not so small regional broadcasters that made up the ITV Network. The series would give us one of the most memorable appearances of an ex-Beatle on TV in the ’70s with George’s Pirate Song.
Rutland Weekend Television was also where we saw the Rutling Stones perform I Must Be in Love. After a quick name change to the Rutles, the legend that lasted a lunchtime, the “Prefab Four” – Dirk, Stig, Barry, and Nasty – conquered Saturday Night Live and made the TV special All You Need Is Cash. George appeared in it, John refused to give his preview copy back (while warning Get Up and Go was too close to Get Back ).
What made the Rutles work was Innes’ songs, among the best Beatles pastiches out there, they are great songs in their own right. Innes earned very little from them though, as they were judged too close and he surrendered the copyright to ATV, where the songwriting royalties went to either John and Paul or George.
Nasty and Barry were touring the UK last month, though were unable to play Leamington Spa (much to their regret)…
Neil had a song for days like these…
RIP Neil James Innes (9 December 1944 – 29 December 2019)
And Sir…

Vaughan Oliver, graphic designer who designed album covers for the likes of Pixies and Cocteau Twins, has died aged 62. Rest in piece
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

I’m in shock. R.I.P. Neil, your humour and music with The Bonzos, The Pythons and The Rutles will all be fondly remembered around here.

The Leamington Spa song reminds me of the the part in the movie Yesterday when the guy goes to play at a hotel and it is closed.
We will keep you in our memories, Mr. Innes.

RIP to one of our neighbors who had brain cancer for 7 years. He was a good man. Even my previous dog, Friendly, loved him. Ohhh Boy and I went to his wake service tonight. That was the first Catholic wake service I’ve ever been to. They said a rosary…first time I’ve every been through one of those. The funeral is tomorrow morning. I wonder what it will be like.
