Ginger’s death marks the loss of one of the greatest rock drummers ever. Not a great human being, often a thoroughly unpleasant human, there will be lots of words spoken about what a lovely guy he was now, but he wasn’t. The 2012 documentary about his life was called Beware of Mr. Baker. In the course of making it, he broke the director’s nose. I look forward to Eric Clapton’s tribute. He has often referred to Ginger as a “total b*****d” in recent years.

Very few of those who worked with Ginger had a good word for him after they’d finished working with him. There was lots not to like about Mr. Baker but his drumming was something special.

Paul’s tribute:

Ginger Baker-Beatles connections off the top of my head:

-The Graham Bond Organisation toured with the Moody Blues. Denny Laine from the Moody Blues, of course, would later be in Wings.
-Linda Eastman (as she was then known) took many pictures of Cream.
-The Cream song Badge on the Goodbye album is co-written by and features guitar from George Harrison . Additionally, Ringo might have had a small hand in writing it.
-Ginger Baker plays drums on Billy Preston’s That’s the Way God Planned It album, which was produced by and features musical contributions from George Harrison .
-Ginger Baker plays drums on I Remember Jeep on the Apple Jam disc of George’s All Things Must Pass .
Denny Laine of Wings and Alan White of the Plastic Ono Band were in the supergroup Ginger Baker’s Air Force.
-The Paul McCartney and Wings song “Picasso’s Last Words (Drink to Me)” was recorded at a studio in Lagos, Nigeria owned by Ginger Baker. Additionally, Ginger plays percussion on the song.
-Ginger Baker attended the wedding of Eric Clapton and Pattie Boyd. The one where the Beatles semi-reunion happened. (Lesser-known fact: a Cream semi-reunion happened at that wedding, as well. Baker, Bruce, and Clapton reunited, but Mick Jagger insisted on singing lead vocals.)
-When Jack Bruce was in Ringo’s All-Starr Band in 1996-2000, Ginger made a couple guest appearances on drums.
Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr attended the Cream reunion shows at the Royal Albert Hall in 2005.

Should be noted that the majority of the response to Robert Freeman’s death, including Paul and Ringo’s responses, is in the Beatles News thread.

Iconic ’60s & ’70s British photographer Terry O’Neill has died from pancreatic cancer aged 81.

He was one of the first Fleet Street photographers to photograph the Beatles…

I was only 20, and the youngest photographer on Fleet Street. It was obvious that John was the one with the personality, so I put him in the front.

Andrew ‘Greedy’ Smith from the Australian band Mental As Anything died on Monday aged 63 apparently of a  heart attack while driving his car. It’s still a bit of a shock because he was the last person you would think of to die earlier than his bandmates, he was larger than life. He wrote many of the band’s biggest hits and continued to lead the band after the Mombassa (O’Doherty) brothers quit back in 2000.  That tells you something about how loved the band and Greedy was.  The Mentals have been part of my life since I was a nipper and to be honest I’m still in shock. Rest in peace Greedy, there’s all the chicken you could want to eat in heaven john-lennon-salute_gif.

Oh no @PauliesGirl not kitty a-hard-days-night-paul-10a-hard-days-night-paul-10a-hard-days-night-paul-10 I don’t have a cat, but I really wish I did, and until then I live vicariously through all the people I know who have cats, and several of them have lost their cats lately. As my friend said after his last cat wandered off and has not yet returned, ‘I think there’s some black hole in the universe that all the cats are getting sucked into’ ahdn_paul_01
