Early reports are coming out that Jane Fonda has confirmed the death of her brother, Peter, today, at the age of 79. It’s known that he has struggling with lung cancer for some time, and the reports are he’s died of respiratory failure.
[Edit, Jane Fonda’s statement, “I am very sad. He was my sweet-hearted baby brother. The talker of the family. I have had beautiful alone time with him these last days. He went out laughing.”]
Obviously a big Beatles connection…
…and an actor who was one of those who changed Hollywood…
…coinciding, ironically perhaps, with the release of Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
RIP Peter Henry Fonda (23 February 1940 – 16 August 2019).
and, Sir…

Remembering the 2977 people murdered by 19 terrorist scum 18 years ago today.
I especially
those on United 93, the first to fight back, and those brave members of the emergency services who poured into the twin towers to help people and didn’t get out.
RIP

Remembering Daniel Johnston (1961-2019), lo-fi singer/songwriter and indie legend who, despite suffering from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, carved out an acclaimed career on his own terms. One of my favourite tidbits about his career is that in the early days, when somebody wanted to buy one of his albums on cassette, he used to rerecord the entire album and redraw the artwork for each individual person’s cassette. For some releases he made dozens of copies. Even though his personal problems prevented him from pursuing his ambitions to the full, the purity and innocence of his recorded output shines through in every note.
Rest in piece, Daniel. I hope you find the peace you didn’t get in this life.
“Listen up and I’ll tell a story
About an artist growing old
Some would try for fame and glory
Others aren’t so bold”
“But how can it recognise you
If you don’t step out into the light, the light
Don’t be sad I know you will
Don’t give up until
True love will find you in the end”

I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

Saddened to hear of the death of Robert Hunter (born Robert Burns) at the age of 78 on 23 September.
Lyricist, musician, poet, translator. He will always be associated with the Grateful Dead although he was never a member of the group, only a collaborator. And in the process of collaborating with them and, in particular, Jerry Garcia, provided the Dead with many of their greatest lyrics, including their everlasting signature tune – the wonderful improvisation Dark Star, for which he wrote the lyrics…
He collaborated with the Dead from the late-60s up until (and beyond to a degree) Garcia’s death in 1995.
He and Garcia were introduced by his ex-girlfriend who was then dating Garcia. First impressions on both sides were not good, but they bumped into each other a couple of days later and a friendship was born that lasted through to Garcia’s death.
When the Dead were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, Hunter was included – becoming the only non-member of a band ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame as a member of a group he never joined.
He worked with many others over the years, including Elvis Costello among others. Most famously, after writing a couple of songs with Bob Dylan (“the only person I ever let change my words because, well, he’s Bob Dylan”) in the 80s, he became one of only two people to co-write an album with Bob when they joined forces on 2009’s Together Through Life (the other being 1975’s Desire co-written with Jacques Levy).
His was a fascinating life when you delve into it, with him being part of the CIA’s MKULTRA volunteer tests of psychedelic drugs at Stanford University in 1962 (alongside Ken Kesey, whose later exploits would influence The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour film).
It is difficult to underestimate the influence Hunter had on the development of rock music, one of the truly great lyrical innovators.
RIP Robert Hunter (23 June 1941 – 23 September 2019)
and Sir

Funny, I’ve been playing a lot of Art Blakey records the last few days, and just now I discover that he and Ginger did a duet
