The City of New Orleans is mourning the loss of New Orleans Saints (NFL football team) owner Tom Benson. You don’t have to be a sports fan to admire who he was and what he accomplished in his life. He started out as a clerk in a car dealership and eventually owned an entire chain of them, parlaying that into a financial empire. He bought the Saints not because he loved football, he just didn’t want the team to leave his beloved city, knowing the negative impact it would have. Under his ownership, the Saints went from the NFL’s laughingstock – they were referred to as “The Ain’ts” – to Super Bowl champions and perennial contenders. After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Benson was front and center in the city’s relief efforts. I could go on about him, but will end this by saying one would be hard pressed to find anyone who loved more, or did more for, the beautiful City of New Orleans.
Laissez les bon temps rouler, Thomas Milton Benson.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Rest in peace, Dr. King, and thank you for your work, which brought about some solidarity in this troubled world.

I have been to the Lorraine Motel where he was shot. It is now the National Civil Rights Museum. https://www.civilrightsmuseum.org
My brother was in little bit of the video, about where the struggle stands today, that you see as you leave the museum. He was in a racially-diverse crowd at a ballgame, and the camera zooms in on him. I haven’t been to the museum in several years so I don’t know if they are still using that same video.

Yesterday I learned that my grandmother’s cat Petitblanc (who, despite his name, was black and exceedingly fat) had passed away.
He was the closest thing to a pet that my sister or I had, and I still can’t quite believe that when we visit them next, he won’t come waddling out to turn his nose up at our caresses.
Rest in peace, good cat, you will always hold a (very) large and furry place in our hearts

Thanks Holey. I can’t quite believe it yet, but I know it’s gonna be hard when we visit my grandparents and he’s not there. Also, Silly Sis is going to be utterly heartbroken.

Sorry to hear that, @Beatlebug. Never easy to lose a familiar and expected presence.
Sad to hear of the death of actor Verne Troyer at the age of 49.
Probably most famous for coming fourth in the 2009 UK Celebrity Big Brother, though the oldies among us may remember him from his role as Mini-Me in the Austin Powers movies (or some of at least… don’t know if he made it to all of them…).
I mainly knew him from chat shows. He could make me laugh.
RIP Verne

Musician Avicii found dead at the age of 28. Unbelievable. You may have heard his song Hey Brother, and his big hit Wake Me Up featuring Aloe Blacc (the guy who sang I need a Dollar). Shocking news. RIP
