Rosie Hamlin, lead singer of Rosie & The Originals, died on 30 March, aged 71, Rolling Stone report.
Recording his version of their sole hit during the Spector Rock ‘N’ Roll sessions (which Hamlin also wrote, aged 14!), John prefaced it by saying, “This here is one of my all-time favourite songs”:
He added to his preface, “Send my love to Rosie, wherever she may be”. Seems apt.
RIP Rosalie Méndez Hamlin.

RIP David Peel, gone to the great bong in the sky.
As most probably know, John Lennon rediscovered David and his marijuana-induced weirdness in the 1970’s, and Lennon produced his album, The Pope Smokes Dope.

RIP funny man…seems sad that all the mourners at his wake will be able to insult him (as he’d probably want) without him being able to get the last word
And RIP to Dave Peel too.

Very sad to say that, after a false rumour and false confirmation earlier this week, one of the Beatles earliest BBC champions, the great Brian Matthew left this mortal coil (if I can’t use fecking passed! ) on Saturday 8 April 2017, confirmed by both the BBC and his god-daughter.
Brian was an essential part of the early years of the boys success. He was one of those from the older generation who instantly got it.
RIP Brian Matthew.

Rest in Peace, John Clarke, the greatest satirist ever produced in New Zealand and subsequently transplanted/transported to Australia. For 30 years he and Brian Dawe have collaborated on political satire which you can find on youtube which probably explains Australian culture and politics better than we can. Here is one small thing he wrote concerning the first female Australian PM:
xxi) And the tent-flap rustled again a third time, and there came forth Andrew whose name was called Wilkie, and he singeth a song from the double White Album . And it was ‘Julia .’

That is truly a travesty. Such a fantastic comedian, and did some wonderful bagging of our lame attempts at governments.
RIP John Clarke.

Session guitarist, percussionist and Greenwich Village folkie, Bruce Langhorne, passed away in a hospice on Friday (14 April) from kidney failure. He has been ill for, at least, a couple of years, following a stroke, with their being a tribute album last year to help with his medical and care bills.
Bruce was a fascinating figure as a guitarist. Worked with everybody – Joan Baez, Odetta (accompanying her moments before Dr. King gave his “I Have a Dream…” speech), Peter, Paul & Mary, Richie Havens, The Clancy Brothers, Gordon Lightfoot…
One of the things that made him fascinating as a guitarist is that he’d blown off half his right hand making homemade fireworks when he was 12. Lost two fingers and most of his thumb.
On 30 September 1961, along with bassist Bill Lee, he was on a Carolyn Hester session for Columbia, produced by John Hammond. Carolyn had bought a kid along from the Village that was making an impression to play harmonica…
His and the harmonica player’s path (whose first session it was) would cross often.
When Albert Grossman bought a band into to back Bob for some of The Freewheelin’… sessions in late ’62.
Bob would recall the inspiration for Mr. Tambourine Man as being Langhorne arriving at a session, struggling in with a large Turkish frame drum.
And he was there, most importantly, when Bob went electric, on Bringing It All Back Home. His is the lead guitar on Subterranean Homesick Blues and Maggie’s Farm, plays the counterpoint on the song he inspired, Tambourine Man. His guitar is all over one of the great albums of all-time.
He was back on guitar for the Pat Garrett sessions.
He worked on several film soundtracks, especially for Peter Fonda.
He then started a hot sauce company in 1992.
Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me
I ain’t sleepy and there ain’t no place I’m going to…
RIP Bruce Langhorne.

My dad’s best friend is terminally ill and he’s moving in on Wednesday to spend his last weeks with us.
He passed away today, aged sixty, after a yearlong battle with cancer. He was surrounded by friends and family.
He was a kind person and one of the best guitar players I’ve ever known personally. We made sure he had his music. He’s had his Beatles, his Stones, his Cream, his Ten Years After, his Stevie Ray Vaughan.
One thing that really impressed me is that I never once heard him say “Why me?.” He felt limitations, sure, but he never felt sorry for himself. I don’t think I could do the same were I in a similar situation.
RIP Paul

NeckoNot once does the diversity seem forced -- the genius of the record is how the vaudevillian "When I'm 64" seems like a logical extension of "Within You Without You" and how it provides a gateway to the chiming guitars of "Lovely Rita. - Stephen T. Erlewine on Sgt Pepper's
