Wow. I’m pretty shocked at this whole thing. I mean, I knew he had his share of health problems from the In My Life thread, but I wouldn’t have imagined him passing. Maybe that’s a stupid thing to say. I dunno. He’d forgive me.
He was a really friendly guy and was easy to get along with. He was also highly enthusiastic about the Beatles. Good vibes to his wife and kids.
Rest in peace, Matt Busby.

Aw, man. Our dear friend went way too soon. I will miss his posts. I remember the PMs we shared when he first joined the forum and was trying to learn how all the features work. Rest in peace, dear forumpudlian.

Oh my god. I cannot even think of anything to say that will express the depth of my shock and sadness. I scarcely knew him, but whenever he was around, he was always such a great Forumpudlian and a great person, and I cannot conceive that he will never post here again. The forum has suffered a huge loss. (If this sounds canned, I promise that it isn’t — it’s just that something this massive cannot be expressed in words without sounding like platitudes.)
RIP, Matt Busby. You died too soon, and we’ll miss you dreadfully.
Thank you for telling us, @Zig — it’s terribly sad, but I’m glad that we know, instead of ignorantly supposing he just disappeared.
I hope that when I die, someone will think to inform you all, but I rather doubt it. Suffice it to say that if I disappear for more than a year without warning, I’m probably dead. Though it’s always possible I will return from the grave.

One thing I’ve learned is that we can’t take life for granted. As you get older, people start dropping like flies. I’ve already started to see it and I’m only 46.
I know I could be next. Disease, sudden heart failure, getting hit by a car or a truck–anything can happen at any time. I used to hate my birthdays, but now I’m just glad to know I’ve survived another year.

This has prompted me to once again start reaching out to people I had temporarily lost touch with. Life gets very busy and even though I think of old friends often, I don’t interact with them nearly enough.

Good idea. I pity peppy already, having to beak the terrible news. And I’m not even dying!

Returning to seriousness. In Matt Busby’s memory, here is the very fitting title track off of an album I recall him speaking of with great fondness:

It’s total crap news and very much a shock.
Matt (aka Kermy) was (horrid word in this context) a genuine guy whose posts where always good and enjoyable to read. Additionally he was really easy to talk to, on here and thru PMs. Horrible and difficult to understand that there is no more.
Thoughts go out to his wife, kids, family and his other friends at this time.

My god, what news. I’d never imagined losing one of our forum members.
I hadn’t gotten to know him that well in the short amount of time that I’ve been here, so I haven’t much authority to speak about him, but from everything he posted and from everything everyone is saying and has said about him, he seemed like a great guy.
RIP Matt Busby, you’ll be greatly missed.

Vale Matt Busby, a gracious and empathetic poster. I’ve been rereading some of our chats (he seems to have PMed everyone), and he was only six months older than me. But when you gotta go, you gotta go. It’s amazing that someone can touch you with words on a screen, and Matt had that touch. My heart goes out to his family, a unique loss.

I’ve just received a phone call that one of the service users I work with has passed on suddenly. I saw him all of yesterday and this morning and he was doing great. Elderly but in good spirits and a great guy to be around.
Utterly s**t news.
Work is going to be s**t for a while.
Condolences to his family, friends, work staff and everyone else.
If it wasn’t so late and I wasn’t in the middle of nowhere i’d go and get horribly drunk.

Phil Chess, co-founder of Chicago’s Chess Records, dead at 95
Phil Chess, co-founder of Chicago’s legendary Chess Records, a label credited with helping to invent rock ‘n’ roll, has died in Tucson, Ariz., at 95.
Mr. Chess and his brother, Leonard, Jewish immigrants from Poland, started Chess in 1950. They recorded Muddy Waters, Etta James, Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy and other top musicians who spread the gospel of the blues. Teens in England and around the world heard the so-called “race music” Chess helped popularize, and the cross-pollination helped birth rock.
As Waters once put it, “The blues had a baby, and they named it rock ‘n’ roll.”
Chess could be described as the midwife. In 1951, the label released what some consider the first rock record: 1951’s “Rocket ’88,” by Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats, which included a young Ike Turner.
In 1977, a Chess record went to outer space. The Voyager mission carried recordings including Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode.”
Mr. Chess died Tuesday evening at his 30-acre ranch in Tucson, said his daughter, Pam.
The music scene would have been very different without him and his brother, Chicago bluesman and club owner Buddy Guy said Wednesday.
“Phil and Leonard Chess were cuttin’ the type of music nobody else was paying attention to — Muddy, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter, Sonny Boy, Jimmy Rogers, I could go on and on — and now you can take a walk down State Street today and see a portrait of Muddy that’s 10 stories tall,” Guy said. “The Chess brothers had a lot to do with that. They started Chess Records and made Chicago what it is today — the blues capital of the world. I’ll always be grateful for that.”
Roger Ebert, the late Chicago Sun-Times film critic and blogger, once summarized the power and influence of Chess this way: “The former studios of Chess Records on South Michigan in Chicago are as important to the development of rock ‘n’ roll as the Sun Records in Memphis. You could make a good case, in fact, that without Chess there might have been no Sun, and without Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry, there might have been no Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis or Carl Perkins. Rock ‘n’ roll flowed directly, sometimes almost note by note, from rhythm and blues.”
Ebert was writing about the 2010 film “Who do You Love,” which told the improbable genesis story of Chess, or “how two Jewish immigrant kids from Poland sold the family junkyard to start a music club on the black South Side and helped launch the musical styles that have influenced everything since.”
The Chess Records story also was dramatized in the 2008 movie “Cadillac Records,” featuring Beyonce, Adrien Brody, Mos Def and Jeffrey Wright.
The Rolling Stones made an early pilgrimage to Chess and used the studio’s address for the name of a 1965 instrumental, “2120 S. Michigan Avenue.”
The building was designated a Chicago city landmark in 1990.
Perennial classics of blues and R&B came out of Chess, performed by countless artists who put their own spin on the songs. While at Chess, Dixon wrote “(I’m Your) Hoochie Coochie Man” for Waters, as well as “You Need Love,” which Led Zeppelin later reinterpreted as “Whole Lotta Love.”
Also at Chess, Dixon wrote “Wang Dang Doogle” for Koko Taylor. Howlin’ Wolf’s “Little Red Rooster” was recorded at Chess. In 1969, Fleetwood Mac cut a double LP there, “Fleetwood Mac in Chicago,” featuring Dixon, Guy, Otis Spann, Honeyboy Edwards and “Shakey” Horton.
Phil Chess would downplay his contributions to music, once saying, “I didn’t know what I was doing.”
A private service is planned in Tucson, relatives said. Leonard Chess died at 52 in 1969.
Rest in peace.

Y’all know I pop in every Now And Then to check up on things… this is unbelievable. Stunnned to hear about MB.
I remember when he was first posting as Kermy, he was so incredibly and constantly friendly, really excited to talk to people about the Beatles, clearly knew his stuff. Insane. My dad’s 53, too… really scary stuff. Best thoughts and wishes to his family.
RIP Matt Busby.

I was just going through the Introductions thread (to find my own introduction, actually) when I came across MB’s. Thought I’d put it here to preserve some record of his enthusiasm and friendliness.
Hi. My name is Mike, I’m a 51yo male in Ohio USA. Like Dave Grohl, my father, my, and my oldest son’s favorite band is the Beatles 🙂
And AhhGirl, I tried the quote button before I posted that, but all it seemed to do was put “xxx said” and then the text of the quoted post in – no sign of italics or a greyish-blue box. I still haven’t figured it out but I’ll look for a “test post” type thread to try to figure it out.
As I said in the long intro, I’ve been a Beatles fan since I was 3 (1966). Fool on the Hill is the first song I ever remember hearing, and I remember the exact time and place – in my parents’ friends’ car on the way to dinner on vacation in Sacramento, California.
Because of my age, and my father’s musical collection, I was mainly acquainted with the major hits and the albums starting with Sgt. Pepper‘s on up. It is only within the last year or so that I’ve acquired a whole lot of beatles stuff, including the Mono box set and all the bbc sessions and the anthology dvds and cds. So I’m still fairly new to all the b sides and much of the early stuff. I’ve been listening to 95% Beatles for the past year and I still haven’t gotten to all the stuff I got!
So keeping in mind that I’m not really familiar with the early stuff to comment on it, I’m loving it and keep listening, especially to the early albums, over and over. My favorite album is Abbey Road, followed by Sgt. Pepper‘s and Revolver a close 3rd. Some of my favorite songs (but how can you name just a few when there are like 30 tied for my favorite!) are Here Comes The Sun, Because (the vocals-only version is incredible), I Saw Her Standing There, Penny Lane,Strawberry Fields Forever, Fool on the Hill, I’ve Just Seen A Face…well I could go on and on…my ringtone is the (actual mp3, not electronic tones) of I’m Only Sleeping. If you call my cell phone you’ll hear some Lennon song (can’t remember which cuz I never call myself lol). Some highlights of what I’ve learned in the past year – how incredible John’s voice really was, the first use of backwards guitar (ever afaik) on Revolver, their early lives up through the Decca sessions so far, again I could go on and on…I’ll try to keep from going on too much in my posts. Oh yeah – my favorite Beatle is Gorgeous!
