From the Wiki article on Billy Paul.
“I was singing totally Jazz then, but when I heard the Beatles and heard the gospel influence and everything I just said: ‘I can make jazz with R&B.’ That transition came when The Beatles came out to America. When I heard The Beatles that was my turning point. They were like my mentors. You know the funny thing about that, when I heard (Billy sings) ‘I Wanna Hold Your Hand,’ at first I said these guys are like a flash in the pan. But the second album when they started doing all this, I had to like take all that back. John Lennon – one of the greatest writers in the world.”

A family spokesman has confirmed the passing of Muhammad Ali at the age of 74.
He was probably the greatest sportsman of the 20th Century, certainly one of them, whose life was as remarkable outside the ring as it was in.
One of the few who knew fame at the level The Beatles did. A funny, profound and erudite man who was prepared to suffer for his principles.
Such a life. Such a man.
RIP to The Greatest.

My heart is very heavy upon hearing the news of Muhammad Ali’s passing. I never tired of seeing him on television when I was a kid. My dad and I would sit on the couch mesmerized every time the man boxed, talked or joked around with Howard Cosell. So many childhood memories have come flooding back. Even in poor health at the end of his life the man exuded a graceful confidence not easily matched.

Didn’t he punch people who call him that or did that change as he got older?
Edit: A quote from Muhammad Ali
Cassius Clay is a slave name,” he said. “I didn’t choose it and I don’t want it. I am Muhammad Ali, a free name — it means ‘beloved of God ‘ — and I insist people use it when people speak to me and of me.
So I think it is best for future mourners of Muhammad Ali to not refer to him as
Cassius Clay.

I mean no disrespect when I refer to anyone, upon their death, by their name given at birth.
Once Cassius became Muhammad, I also referred to him as Muhammad. That is who he wanted to be. He changed his name at a time when his life was in turmoil and he turned to a religion other than the one he was born into in order to find peace. Prior to the turmoil, there had to have been a period of blissful peace in his life no matter how young he was. That is the peace I wish for everyone throughout their lives. At best, that is the peace I wish for everyone upon their death. That is why I refer to anyone who dies by their birth name, no matter what he or she has changed it to.
We don’t need to agree on this. We simply need to respect where each other is coming from. Thanks for understanding.

Watched the memorial for Muhammad Ali yesterday and it was touching and wonderful. RIP champ, and thank you for touching our lives.
And today, my heart goes out to the family, friends, and fans of Christina Grimmie. Only 22 years old, and out there trying to make her dreams come true. It’s so heart breaking. Selena Gomez is playing in Miami tonight and has cancelled her meet and greets. Selena’s dad managed Christina, and she and Selena were really close. Under the circumstances I can understand that decision. RIP sweet Christina.

I cant believe this. 50 shot dead and 53 injured at a shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando. This is what’s wrong with the world, why cant we just f*****g Give Peace A Chance instead of massacring everyone different than us.

Watching the memorial service for Muhammad Ali should have been mandatory viewing for the whole world. For those who did not see it, religious leaders from many faiths were among the eulogists. Muslim, Jewish, Baptist, Catholic, Onondaga Nation and Buddhist were among those represented. One wise young lady mentioned the LGBT community in her eulogy. All shared the same core message; the hatred needs to stop.
With that, I respectfully ask that any further conversation outside of memorializing those who have passed away take place outside of this thread.

I am surprised this Beatle-related death hasn’t been posted yet.
The former Wings guitarist and Northern Ireland music legend Henry McCullough has died.
The 72-year-old was from Portstewart and was one of Paul McCartney ’s favourites in the early days of Wings.
Born in 1943, he took up the guitar as a boy. He supported Jimi Hendrix and went on to play with some of the biggest names in music, including Joe Cocker and then Paul McCartney & Wings.
He played lead guitar on Wings’ James Bond theme Live And Let Die , but he is perhaps best known for his solo on the band’s number one hit My Love.
After leaving Wings after just one album he later turned to session work with major stars.
He also played with Marianne Faithfull, Dr Feelgood and Pink Floyd and played the original Peace and Love Festival at Woodstock.
McCullough also sang and wrote music but one of the renowned guitarist’s more memorable contributions to music was a few choice words for Pink Floyd.
When playing with Wings at Abbey Road studios in London, members of the English band stopped off from their own recording session next door and asked for a few soundbites for their album Dark Side of the Moon.
McCullough’s line: “I don’t know, I was really drunk at the time,” found its way into the closing bars of the famous track Money.
Beatle Paul McCartney has paid tribute to Mr McCullough.
“I was very sad to hear that Henry McCullough, our great Wings guitarist, passed away today,” he posted on his website.
“He was a pleasure to work with, a super-talented musician with a lovely sense of humour.
“The solo he played on ‘My Love’ was a classic that he made up on the spot in front of a live orchestra. Our deepest sympathies from my family to his.”
Elsewhere, his lead guitar on stage with Joe Cocker and The Grease Band on day three of Woodstock is the stuff of legend as they put on an electrifying performance of The Beatles’ hit With A Little Help From My Friends .
He also toured extensively with his own band.
Over recent years Mr McCullough had suffered ill health.
A concert was organised in Dublin to help raise funds for his ongoing care.
Well-known Irish musicians, many of whom worked alongside McCullough, played Vicar Street for a special Salute To Henry fundraising concert.
Among the artists taking part were Christy Moore, Declan Sinnott, Mick Flannery, John Spillane, Johnny Duhan, Honor Heffernan, The Ed Deane Band and The Kevin Doherty Band. Two bands for whom he played in the past, Sweeney’s Men, and Fleadh Cowboys, are also part of the line-up.
The gig was organised by Pete Cummins of Fleadh Cowboys and ex-Pogues manager Frank Murray.
On Tuesday, his agent Nigel Martyn confirmed Mr McCullough’s passing.
He said Henry’s long-time French partner Josie said he had died that morning.
“She had lost her one true love,” he said.
The couple had been living for several years in Ballywindelland, between Coleraine and Ballymoney in Co Antrim, in a home they fondly referred to as “Ballywonderland”.
McCullough also played on the music for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit Jesus Christ Superstar.
He played one of his last live performances in a small rock club in Draperstown, Co Londonderry a year before suffering a heart attack which left him incapacitated.
Mr Martyn added: “He had suffered severe brain damage and was left completely incapacitated for the last four years.
“But Josie has been incredible – the way she looked after him was absolutely out of this world.”
Speaking in 2012 of his friend, the impresario Paul Charles said: “Henry has always been a superb musician, in demand and much loved.”
“He played on the original Jesus Christ Superstar album before it ever became a hit musical.
”In his heyday he was always delighted to sit in at sessions with McCartney who eventually persuaded him to join Wings. He played lead guitar on their hit My Love.”
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
Tributes have been made to Mr McCullough on social media.

Also lost in the headlines was the passing of hockey legend Gordie Howe. “Mr. Hockey” played in an unheard of 32 major league seasons between the NHL and the WHA and played on 6 championship teams. He passed away on 10 June, at the age of 88.

British Labour MP Jo Cox was shot and stabbed in her West Yorkshire constituency this afternoon. She died of her injuries. A man is in custody.
She was 41 years old, a wife, a mother of two young children, and former head of policy for Oxfam. She was only elected a year ago May. She was already proving impressive and looked like she was on her way to becoming a major Labour figure of the future. She is such a loss in such shocking circumstances.
Whilst it is most importantly the loss of a wife and mother, and though nothing about the attack suggests terrorism, it is also an attack on democracy.
RIP, Jo. You were a star.
