Or, he’s afraid Paul would come in and take over and tell everyone what and how to play. God wants to be Sgt. Pepper for a while so he’s leaving Paul here. That’s absolutely fine with me.

That doesn’t say much for John.a-hard-days-night-george-10

Naaaahhh… he got John and, more importantly, George, ages ago.

Or, he’s afraid Paul would come in and take over and tell everyone what and how to play. God wants to be Sgt. Pepper for a while so he’s leaving Paul here. That’s absolutely fine with me.

I think that’s far more likely. You’ll notice he’s leaving Roger Waters around too… and Roger was even more, ah, assertive than Paul. ahdn_paul_01

I was sad to learn of the recent death of Keith Emerson.  IMHO, he was the greatest keyboard player in rock music.  ELP was one of my favorite bands on the early 70s and I will miss him.

From what I’ve read, Keith committed suicide from a gunshot wound to the head at age 71.  He was depressed at how nerve damage in his hand hindered his ability to play like he used to.  And he may have took too much to heart cynical comments from people on the internet of him being over the hill.  While flamboyant and aggressive on stage, many have said he was a kind gentle soul in real life.

RIP Frank Sinatra Jr.

LOS ANGELES –  Frank Sinatra Jr., who carried on his famous father’s legacy with his own music career and whose kidnapping as a young man added a bizarre chapter to his father’s legendary life, died Wednesday. He was 72.

The younger Sinatra died unexpectedly of cardiac arrest while on tour in Daytona Beach, Florida, the Sinatra family said in a statement to The Associated Press.

The statement said the family mourns the untimely passing of their son, brother, father and uncle. No other details were provided.

Sinatra Jr. was the son of Sinatra’s first wife, Nancy Barbato Sinatra, and the younger sister of Nancy Sinatra, who had a successful musical career of her own.

Sinatra Jr. grew up watching his father from the wings of the stage, and followed him into music as a teenager, eventually working for the senior Sinatra as his musical director and conductor.

The elder Sinatra died of a heart attack May 14, 1998, at 82.

Sinatra Jr. was able to provide a link to his father’s music after his death, performing his songs and arrangements on tours and especially in Las Vegas.

“Since my father’s death, a lot of people have made it clear that they’re not ready to give up the music,” Sinatra Jr. told the AP in 2002. “For me, it’s a big, fat gift. I get to sing with a big orchestra and get to sing orchestrations that will never be old.”

When Sinatra Jr. was 19 in 1963, three men kidnapped him at gunpoint from a Lake Tahoe hotel. He was returned safely after two days when his family paid $240,000 for his release.

Barry Keenan, a high school friend of Nancy Sinatra, was arrested with the other two suspects, Johnny Irwin and Joe Amsler, and convicted of conspiracy and kidnapping.

Keenan masterminded the kidnapping, prosecutors said. He was sentenced to life plus 75 years in prison, but was declared legally insane at the time of the crime, had his sentence reduced and was paroled in 1968 after serving 4 ½ years.

^ Ah he was a legend, I loved his cameo on The Sopranos. It really gave a *nudge nudge, say no more* nod to his father’s past.

RIP

Paul Daniels sadly died on Thursday. I thought he was fantastic, never seemed to up himself and was willing to have a laugh about himself.

RIP Patty Duke.

I remember her first from this:

Patty Duke won an Oscar at 16 for her portrayal of Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker  after having previously performed the role on Broadway.  She’d turn around and portray Helen Keller’s teacher Anne Sullivan in the 1984 TV movie of The Miracle Worker, garnering her a third Emmy award. She was also notable in the cult classic Valley of the Dolls.

I heard about her passing on the way home last night. Until I heard her obituary, I had no idea that Sean Astin is her son.

It’s funny I had recorded an episode of QI, a couple of nights back and I was watching it this morning having not heard of Ronnie C’s passing.

One of the hints to a question was ‘it’s by a dead comedian called Ronnie’ and I thought “oh Ronnie Corbett….wait a minute he’s not dead”.

But apparently I was wrong.

R.I.P Ronnie

Merle Haggard passed away yesterday. Here’s a cover of Yesterday he did with Willie Nelson.

Here’s the song Merle Haggard did that mentioned The Beatles

The beginning lyrics

I wish a buck was still silver
It was back when the country was strong
Back before Elvis
Before the Vietnam war came along

Before The Beatles and ‘Yesterday
When a man could still work, still would
The best of the free life behind us now
And are the good times really over for good?

Ringo Starr leads tributes to country musician Merle Haggard, dead at 79
Snippets from the article

The singer’s manager confirmed that Haggard died in Palo Cedro, California of pneumonia on Wednesday (April 6), his birthday.

Ringo Starr added to the tributes, writing: “God bless Merle Haggard peace and love to all his family. Merle was a hero of mine peace and love”.

Gareth Thomas, lead of Blakes7, has just died aged 71. He was in practically everything in the 70’s on tv, but was also a busy stage actor.

F*****g hell.  Prince Is Dead.

Prince, the multi-talented musical genius who emerged from Minneapolis to become a controversial chart-topping singer/songwriter and movie star, died Thursday, according to TMZ.com.

The 57-year-old Prince was hospitalized last week with the flu, sparking rumors about his health. But the iconic musician appeared at a Paisley Park dance party last Saturday to quiet the speculation.

Wait a few days before you waste any prayers,” Prince told the fans at his Minnesapolis estate.
