What the hell is the deal with this year so far?! RIP Glenn Frey… I’m glad I was able to see the Eagles together last time they toured, and they sounded just as great and looked just as great as ever.

Wow – yes indeed – more sad news. I’m getting to the point where I might have to skip this thread for a while 🙁

Saw the news about Glen Frey this morning and it was one heck of a shock, especially along with the deaths of Alan Rickman and David Bowie in the last week.
Sadly I suppose I’ll have to get used to these as most of the artists, comedians, actors etc I like are from the 60’s and/or 70. Not nice tho.

I understand that (as said above ) artists from this era are going to die eventually, but I hate why it seems like it’s happening this month in particular and that everyone is still relatively young.

Mod Note: This post was moved to this thread by Zig as, sadly, it is a more apt fit.
A sad day for the music of Liverpool as Colin Vearncombe of Black has died.
I heard of his accident about a week ago on Yahoo, and put a comment that I hope he pulls through like Marc Almond. Sadly, we know now this wasn’t to be.
I only knew of him from his first album and hits.
It was only when he had his accident that I read his wiki entry, and he made 14 albums from ’87 to ’15. So, I was quite pleased that he still had a career in music and not given up like maybe some of his 80s contemporaries.

Sad to see the passing of Sir Terry Wogan after a short battle with cancer, one of the greatest broadcasters the UK has ever had, and a proud son of Ireland. He interviewed Paul, George and Ringo many times on his ’80s chat show, and when Paul returned to live performance in the late ’80s, he went on Wogan to announce it.
This is probably my favourite Wogan interview with Paul. Ah, he looked so much older then, he looks younger than that now.

The 28 January was a sadder day for Jefferson Airplane fans than we knew. Not only did Paul Kantner pass, but it has been revealed that Signe Anderson, the band’s original female vocalist, also passed on the same day.
A truly great vocalist, as shown on their first album, Jefferson Airplane Takes Off, she left the band on good terms after becoming a mother and realising the difficulties of raising a child while on the road.
Marty Balin said on Facebook:
One sweet lady has passed on. I imagine that she and Paul woke up in heaven and said “Hey what are you doing here? Let’s start a band” and no sooner then said Spencer [Dryden, JA drummer] was there joining in!
Jorma Kaukonen wrote on his blog:
Signe was one of the strongest people I have ever met. She was our den mother in the early days of the Airplane… a voice of reason on more occasions than one… an important member of our dysfunctional little family. I always looked forward to seeing her when we played the Aladdin in Portland. She never complained and was always a joy. Flights of angels sing thee to thy rest sister. You will always live in my heart…
While Jack Cassidy commented on Facebook:
I was just informed of the passing of Signe Anderson, the same day as we lost Paul. Signe was our, Jefferson Airplane’s, first female singer. I had been in touch with Signe this past week as she had moved from her home to hospice care. She was a real sweetheart with a terrific contralto voice coming from a solid folk background. Listen to how she made the three part harmonies of JA Takes Off sound so thick…her wonderful tone between Paul’s and Marty’s. A sad day… for those of us still here.
January really was a crappy month!

John’s cousin Stan Parkes died last month. http://www.examiner.com/articl…..ays-author
Stan’s stepfather is the one who gave John £100 that John and Paul used for the trip to Paris. Right?
In this post, it says that Stan was Julia ‘s cousin. Did Julia have a cousin Stan or is the story referring to John’s cousin?

Stan was John’s cousin. He was the son of John’s favourite aunt (other than Mimi) Elizabeth although he called her Mater. She married a Scottish dentist in 1949 called Bert Sutherland because her first husband had died and it was them who gave John the £100 in 1961.
So yes, you were right.

The four members of upcoming British Indie band Viola Beach and their manager all died when their car went off a bridge in Sweden in the early hours of Saturday while returning to the UK after appearing at a Swedish festival on Friday.
Very sad to see the loss of such promising youngsters.
RIP!

Thanks, @pepperland.
I realized I forgot to put the link to the post I was referring to. I added the link now.
RN, that is sad about that band. I’ve been listening to their videos you posted.
EDIT: It just dawned on me… the name Stan probably came from Elizabeth’s maiden name Stanley.

I think it means Julia Baird, John’s half-sister.

I know no deaths are nice but that is very much a flippin’ heck moment. So horrible.
