I honestly didn’t know Bowie had been ill for so long with cancer so it was a real shock to find out he had died this morning. With new music out even more so.
Have never been a huge fan but its easy to see the influence that he had has on so many people and the music scene in general. Should also be acknowledged, and Bowie should be heavily praised for not just being an established artist who just went into the recording studio every two years and churned out the same record; he tried new things, pushing music boundaries and challenging what musicians, critics, fans and the public thought not only about himself but about what music should be. It will be definitely be less interesting without him about.
Oh, ‘The Labyrinth’ is a brilliant film, if you haven’t seen it do so.

None of us knew. That’s what makes this so shocking. People pored over Blackstar’s lyrics and videos in search of meaning, but the big one seemed to be hidden in plain sight. And while he could never have returned to the top of his game, until the end he was very much releasing music filled with vitality and creativity. How many 69-year-olds do that?
When famous people die, often it’s not unexpected. Most people knew that Freddie Mercury and Frank Sinatra were in declining health, and pictures of them looking gaunt were in the press during their final weeks. Normally people bow out of the public eye when their health starts to fail. But Bowie was made an appearance only last month for the Lazarus stage show, and he didn’t seem especially frail in the Blackstar videos. I think that’s one reason why this is such a blow. He was very much taken before his time was up.

I heard a good quote earlier today which said something about how, even if you don’t like Bowie, your favourite musicians did. It might not be true in every case, but the guy’s reach was immense. What a legacy. And for once I can’t wait for all the outtakes and offcuts to be issued.

It’s hard to find the right words. Like everyone else, I was stunned upon hearing the news. Concentrating is difficult today.
There’s a Starman waiting in the sky…and all the children boogie.
R.I.P. David Bowie

Holy crap, David Bowie died. Let me get one thing straight: I haven’t heard much of his music. Well, the actual truth is I am just discovering his music more recently. Found out through Instagram and the fact the number one trending hashtag was David Bowie. Even though I wouldn’t consider myself a fan, I’m still shocked to find out the news.
R.I.P

I posted ten suggested titles for Bowie newbies to discover, but I’m sure every fan would have a different and equally good list.

David Bowie to me is kind how The Beatles, particularly young people, are to other people. There are so many songs. And because there are so many songs and he had such diversity there many songs that I knew, but I didn’t know they were by him. Even with that said, I knew of him and was shocked to find out this morning. The news in the morning is the worst me because thats when (when it happens) I find out people have passed on. Heaven has gained another star in the sky.
RIP David Bowie

I just can’t believe he’s gone. I only found out half an hour ago, it was the front-page news in the newspaper at the supermarket. It’s never the right time, is it. Gutted.

Indeed – it seems more sudden as he kept his long illness private.

So shocked to hear the unfortunate news. I’m not the biggest Bowie fan, but I think he was one of the most varied and original acts in all of rock history. He actually wrote some of my favorite songs, even if his career turned out pretty spotty in places. Of course, I listened to The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars almost immediately after I heard the news, and I just listened to Blackstar at my friend’s house yesterday (he got it on vinyl). I think my all-time favorite David Bowie songs are Five Years, Changes, and probably Starman. He will be missed
(P.S. I ‘ve heard that Aladdin Sane is pretty good, so I’ll probably get that next.)

Alan Rickman will always be Hans Gruber from ‘Die Hard’ and the Sheriff of Nottingham in ‘Robin Hood Prince of Thieves’ who stole the film from Kevin Coster. And for some reason his appearance in the music video for Texas’ ‘In Demand‘ always sticks in my head.

F**k this week, honestly. Two legends gone, two people who I could never imagine would ever not be here.
R.I.P to them both.

Eagles’ founding member Glenn Frey dies at 67
Guitarist Glenn Frey, a founding member of the legendary classic rock band the Eagles, died Monday of complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis, and pneumonia, a note on the band’s official website confirmed. He was 67.
“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our comrade, Eagles founder Glenn Frey, in New York City,” the band wrote on its website. The Frey family would like to thank everyone who joined Glenn to fight this fight and hoped and prayed for his recovery. Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community & millions of fans worldwide.”
Frey had been sick since last year and in December the Eagles postponed their appearance at the Kennedy Center Honors due to Frey’s illness. In a statement at the time, the band said Frey “has had a recurrence of previous intestinal issues, which will require major surgery and a lengthy recovery period.” The Eagles are scheduled to be honored in the 2016 ceremony.
Frey founded the California band with Don Henley in 1971, though the Eagles took a hiatus from 1980 to 1994. “He was like a brother to me; we were family, and like most families, there was some dysfunction,” Henley said in a statement to EW after Frey’s death. “But, the bond we forged 45 years ago was never broken, even during the 14 years that the Eagles were dissolved.” Henley called him a “spark plug, the man with the plan.”
As a solo artist, Frey was known for tracks like “The Heat Is On,” which hit No. 2 on the Hot 100 and appeared in Beverly Hills Cop, and “You Belong To The City.” He released his last solo album, After Hours, in 2012.
