This news is about two days old, but I’m just hearing now. I was just reading about this guy a few days ago by coincidence.

Sir Nicholas Winton was one of the great unsung and most humble heroes of the 20th Century.
He managed to get 8 trains, with 669 mainly Jewish children, out of Prague just before war was declared on Germany by the Allies. A 9th train was stopped, and the 250 children – all of whom were documented – do not seem to have survived.
He did not only save those children though. Those children had children who had children, etc… There are thousands enriching the world today because of Nicholas Winton, and the number can only continue to grow.
He spent most of his life not saying a word about his actions as a 28-year-old. His wife only found out when she discovered a scrapbook in the attic, and it was she who decided the world should know what he had kept secret…
The world, especially now, needs men and women such as he.
Rest in Peace, knowing the good that you did, you wonderful example of humanity, and one of my personal heroes.

For everyone here, I recommend spending 24-and-a-half minutes with Sir Nicholas Winton in his last major interview at the age of 105. It comes from the end of last year, and if it doesn’t give you things to think about … well, what can I say?
@Necko @Beatlebug
Also, thank you Necko for posting about his passing. I heard on the day it happened, and considered posting, but thought he was too unknown for anyone here to think it mattered. I really should have posted on the day he passed.

I still remember him in Dr. Zhivago, an amazing film. Omar, Patrick, Christopher (see above), many great ones are leaving us these days…
“Forsan et haec olim meminisse juvabit” (“Perhaps one day it will be a pleasure to look back on even this”; Virgil, The Aeneid, Book 1, line 203, where Aeneas says this to his men after the shipwreck that put them on the shores of Africa)

OudisI say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'.

The only major female artist to emerge from the Merseybeat scene, and Brian’s second favourite act he managed, it’s often forgotten just how big a singer Cyril (as John nicknamed her) was during the ’60s. She somehow managed to build herself an even bigger second career as a television presenter with Blind Date and Surprise, Surprise.
She was a special lady who will be sadly missed. This is a very, very sad day.
She gave us a lorra, lorra laughs over the years.
Reunited with her beloved Bobby, may she rest in peace.

Paul has issued a statement saying:
Such a shock to hear about Cilla’s passing. She was a lovely girl who infected everyone with her great spirit. From first meeting her as a cloakroom girl at The Cavern in Liverpool, to seeing her many times since, she always had a fun loving dignity that made her a great pleasure to be around. She had a fine distinctive voice and was always a bit of a laugh. It was a privilege to know and love her.
And Ringo has tweeted:
I just heard the news Cilla black has left us she was a good friend we will all miss her peace to Cilla peace and love to the family R&B xxx
From her 1968 TV series (for which Paul wrote Step Inside Love as the theme tune), Ringo and Cilla:

Was only reminded of her last night thru a funny sketch she did with Morecambe and Wise. Heavily surprised to hear she had passed on. Sad news.
Here’s the very fine ‘It’s For You’ written mainly by Paul; John and Paul make an appearance at the end.
