Huh, I just found out the Maysles were also the ones who filmed Yoko’s “Cut Piece” back in ’65!
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

Small world.
Maybe we will find out that they showed it to John one night when nobody was about.

Sara, Albert’s daughter, posted a tribute at her Facebook:
As many already know, my father passed away last night. His generosity of spirit, love and kindness was felt by many.
In his last minutes he opened up his eyes wide and stared in the eyes of my brother, sister, mother and me, one by one, as we cried and told him how much we loved him. It was beautiful to see that powerful gaze once more, before he left us. This is a photograph from earlier in the day when my mother, sister Rebekah and I sat around him and he gripped our hands tightly in his.
Thank you everyone for your words of kindness. I’m a bit wiped so I’m going to head off of the digital world for the night, but know my family and I really appreciate your outpouring of support.
And a reminder for us all: “Love your subject!” “Get Close!”

There’s also a tribute at George’s page:
RIP and condolences to the family of Albert Maysles.
Albert passed away at the age of 88 on Thursday night. Albert and his brother David revolutionized documentary filmmaking, and Albert was an inspiration and mentor to many filmmakers and artists.
Albert and David’s 1964 16mm documentary ‘What’s Happening! The Beatles In The U.S.A.’ followed The Beatles on their first visit to America in February 1964. In 1991 the film was re-edited and released as ‘The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit.’
The band’s unscripted hi-jinx, especially on the train trip from Washington, D.C. to Miami, FL, filmed in the Maysles’ cinema-verite style, was a direct inspiration for the Beatles movie ‘A Hard Day’s Night .’
Albert Maysles interview with rare outtakes from the film.

Examiner article on Paul’s tribute to Albert Maysles:
“’I was so sad to hear of the death of my friend and work colleague Albert Maysles. I first met him on The Beatles’ first trip to America. He and his brother, David, were the camera team assigned to cover our exploits during this first trip,” the statement began.
“The style was very innovative at that time and sometimes referred to as cinéma vérité. They were attached to each other by what seemed to us to be like an umbilical cord linking straight from Albert’s camera to David’s sound recording equipment. When we would ask them if there was anything they wanted us to do, they simply replied, ‘Be yourselves, act naturally and ignore us completely’.
“The results of their work was a beautiful and fascinating film ‘What’s Happening! The Beatles In The U.S.A.’ which captures the innocence, intimacy, good humour and, what was for us, one of the most exciting things that had happened in our lives.”
[…]
McCartney worked with Maysles again in New York in later years, but under different circumstances. “After David passed away, I kept in touch with Albert and was lucky enough to work with him again on another film covering ‘The Concert For New York City’, which we put on in the aftermath of 9/11,” McCartney said. “As always, he was a great pleasure to work with and always had a mischievous twinkle in his eye. The film came out, ‘The Love We Make’ and was a loving record of these difficult times and the emotion released by the concert and events surrounding it. Albert, it was a pleasure to know you and thanks from all of us who did simply love you.” – Paul McCartney

from Sir Terry Pratchett’s Twitter account in the last half-hour:
AT LAST, SIR TERRY, WE MUST WALK TOGETHER.
Terry took Death’s arm and followed him through the doors and on to the black desert under the endless night.
The End .
Very sad to hear of the death of author Sir Terry Pratchett at the age of 66. Battling Alzheimer’s in recent years, the exact circumstances of his death are yet to be announced.

Oh dear! Rest in peace, Sir Terry. I suppose he wasn’t able to take any messages to The Other Side for John and George?

Indeed – I had just about all of his books and I don’t think any author has given me so many laughs in dark times.

Txs parlance, just found out about this now.
Weird thing is, I have this video (and yes it is a very, very good one), but it’s called: The Beatles The First U.S. Visit. – The Maysles Brothers.
And it’s an 1990 Apple Corps Ltd. copyright video Neil Aspinall is the Executive Director!
