Rolling Stones saxophonist Bobby Keys has passed away.
From Nashville Scene:
Bobby Keys, longtime saxophonist for The Rolling Stones, has died. Michael Webb, keyboardist for Bobby Keys and the Suffering B******s, confirmed Keys’ death with the Scene, saying the legendary musician had been battling cirrhosis and passed away at his home in Franklin early this morning. He was 70 years old.
A Texas native who’d lived in Middle Tennessee since the early ’90s, in addition to his 40-plus-year tenure with The Rolling Stones, Keys appeared on legendary recordings by John Lennon , Joe Cocker, Barbra Streisand, B.B. King, Carly Simon, Lynyrd Skynyrd and others. More details to come.
From Fab Four FAQ 2.0:
(Link to Whatever Gets You Through the Night)
Death came barely two weeks before he would have turned 71; he’d been suffering from cirrhosis of the liver.
You’ve heard his work in a variety of settings: from Elvis’ “Return To Sender” to any number of Rolling Stones’ classics. He toured with them for a number of years; this year, illness delayed his participation in their most recent.
Keys can be heard on All Things Must Pass , Ringo and Goodnight Vienna, Walls And Bridges and Rock ‘N’ Roll , as well as LPs by Keith Moon, Harry Nilsson and Eric Clapton. He was also on the Ring O’Records artist roster as a solo act.
Perhaps his most memorable moment supporting an ex-Beatle is heard here, opening John’s #1 single, “Whatever gets You Through The Night.” As a member of the “Hollywood Vampires,” Keys spent a good deal of the seventies partying with the hardest of partiers. Yet, like his birthday twin Keith Richards, he lived to tell the tale – at least, until now.
His memoir (http://bobbykeys.net/book/ ) is not to be missed.
Edit: Examiner article.
Rest in peace.

R.I.P. Bobby Keys.
I had heard that he was not well and sitting out a tour from a Rolling Stones page that I like of Facebook. I didn’t know that it was that serious.
The Stones just posted a link to this version of Miss You where he really rocks on sax, in his memory.

Very sad to say, Ian McLagan, former keyboardist with The Small Faces and The Faces, occasional Rolling Stone, latterly member of Billy Bragg’s band The Blokes, and who’s played who most of the greats, suffered a stroke today, at the age of 69, and didn’t survive.
One of the greats, and a true loss.
Here he is in June this year:

Rough day. As somebody with Montrealers as parents, I know the stories of Beliiveau. There’s a story that after the US Invasion of Iraq in 2003, fans were booing during the US Anthem at home Canadiens games. The Habs needed it to stop, so they had jean come on the ice during the anthems just so they wouldn’t. He stopped the booing permanently. One of the finest in the sport.
RIP

This hit me hard. One of my favorite players, despite him retiring years before I was born.

Though John was long gone before I was even born, watching his videos seem to belie this fact. Such a lively person he was. When I was new to the Beatles, the way and in the context he departed really saddened me. But listening to the Beatles over and over again and watching videos etc somehow made me forget, until the last few days, that John isn’t with us.
He’s a real Nowhere Man ,
Sitting in his nowhere land
Making all his nowhere plans for nobody
Oh Johnny Boy!

Rest in Peace John. Always thinking of you around this time, and Yoko of course. It was 14 or so years before I born, but I still can’t believe that a great man was taken from us so senselessly.
Still, your spirit lives on in your music and your activism. A true legend. I just wish you were still here.

I feel similarly to SFF. Although I obviously never knew John, listening to his music (which contains so much of himself), seeing videos, and reading about him makes me feel like I did. He was one of the greatest musicians/songwriters of all time and I’m sure a wonderful person behind his abrasive outer shell.
Miss you, John!
