A quote. For a day. Any interesting quotes, put ’em here.
One of the quotes for today shall be: “Is that The Beatles! No! It’s Roy Orbison!” and “Cool, man, cool” (Also my new catchphrase)

Quote of the day
The only term I won’t accept is “genius.” The term “genius” gets used far too loosely in rock & roll. When you hear the melodic structures of what classical musicians put together and you compare it to that of a rock & roll record, there’s a hell of a long way rock & roll has to go. There’s a certain standard in classical music that allows the application of the word “genius,” but you’re treading on thin ice if you start applying it to rock & rollers. The way I see it, rock & roll is folk music. Street music. It isn’t taught in school. It has to be picked up. You don’t find geniuses in street musicians, but that doesn’t mean to say you can’t be really good. You get as much out of rock & roll artistically as you put into it. There’s nobody who can teach you. You’re on your own and that’s what I find so fascinating about it.
–Jimmy Page
An interesting reflection from someone who ought to know. I think it’s arguable that people like Syd Barrett could be considered geniuses.

Yeah I don’t buy that quote for a second. If Rock and Roll isn’t taught, but picked up, yet people are exceptionally talented without training in that field, is that not genius by definition? Syd I wouldn’t even call a genius, just a amazinly creative person.
Another problem I have with the quote is Jimmy Page putting classical music on a pedastal. Yes there have been many geniuses throughout the years in that genre, but that was during a time when those musicians had dedicated their lives to composing from a young age and were mentored by older composers, often legends of their day. Classical has to be taught, and complete mastery of it through practice is no less impressive than some of the structures we hear in Brian Wilson’s compositions, or Frank Zappa’s guitar work. These guys were expectional self taught geniuses, and becaus of this they outrank many classical composers in my opinion.

Yet maybe this argument would be better suited in the Musical Genius thread instead of Quote Of the Day

Wow this thread looks like it really took off!
I’ll add a quote (the most recent addition to my sig): “Love one another.” One of George’s best-ever quotes if you ask me. (And I’m more or less in love with every word that ever came out of his mouth.)

My fave George quote was always this one: “You can never gain perfect happiness unless you obtain that state of consciousness which enables that”. I can’t even tell you how many of my essays from middle school and high school had that, or a very similar, sentence in them.

That sounds like something John would say.

It would seem that that is the case!
Today’s quote is a line from Imagine : “You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will be as one.” It becomes a lot more meaningful if you’ve read Yoko’s quote “A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.” By far my favorite Yoko quote.
