I still can not grasp how few people know who Buddy Holly is anymore. It seems to have started from the beginning, just a few years after his death. Considering his incredibly genius and the positive impact he has had on other musicians, and the joy he brought to the world, it really is astounding how he has mainly been forgotten.
Yes, two albums recently came out with Buddy’s songs being sung by contemporary musicians, but still … it they were barely marketed. I found out about them by accident.

Offline Buddy Holly hasn’t been forgotten, there is a massive fan base for him and his name still appears among the most influential and best artists from his era. His released body of work wasn’t that massive before he died in the plane crash but a load more has come out over the years for example Showcase, Holly In the Hills and the excellent Reminiscing, and all worth a listen tho the unoverdubbed (is that a word, it should be) material is far superior in my opinion, the apartment demos are incredible. Sadly there are also versions of his biggest songs that were overdubbed years later by the Picks that are horrendous, whoever thought Everyday would sound better with crappy backing vocals needs to be taken outside and hit with the master tapes. I bought a cd of them for a couple of quid not having a clue and was horrified, the cd was immediately taken out of the computer and shoved in the bin. There are also about 40 quadrillion compilations that match only Elvis in number.
I much prefer Buddy to Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and the other Sun Records artists.
Had no idea however that 2 albums had been released recently that featured contemporary artists of today covering his material, I wouldn’t have bought them if I had, same as I don’t buy cds of artists who cover the Beatles.

I wouldn’t be all that surprised if I were you. After all, every year less and less people know who The Beatles are.
As for me, I love his music. As mmm said above, “I much prefer Buddy to Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins…”

Offline This goes back a ways, but James Taylor covered Buddy Holly’s “Everyday” back in 1985. I know this might be sacrilege, but I prefer JT’s version to Holly’s.
James Taylor, Paul Simon, McCartney and Lennon — all loved those old rock & roll pioneers.

James Taylor covered Buddy Holly’s “Everyday” back in 1985. I know this might be sacrilege, but I prefer JT’s version to Holly’s.
A matter of personal preference should not be mistaken for sacrilege. I am an Allman Brothers Band fanatic, yet prefer Molly Hatchet’s cover of “Dreams I’ll Never See”.

Offline More of a Beatles fan than a Holly one? I prefer it too, in fact, I prefer a lot of their covers over the original version.

I actually find it one of their least interesting covers. It may be a slightly stronger recording than Buddy’s original, but it’s virtually a xerox of the original. It is one of the few occasions they don’t seem to don’t seem to stamp their own personalities on a cover, sticking far too closely to Buddy’s original arrangement instrumentally and vocally. It seems almost too respectful.

Their version is very similiar, perhaps too similar, but I still prefer it over the original. It’s something about the way they do it. Not to say that Holly wasn’t brilliant at what he did, he was, but I do think that the Beatles did this song better – even if it doesn’t appear to be any different musically.

Offline I’ve seen photos of Paul from the ’80s in Buddy Holly inspired costumes as part of an annual festival he used to host. Does anyone know why he stopped doing it? Was it just that his schedule wouldn’t allow it?

Offline Since around a year or two, I have been listening to Buddy Holly. His lyrics and music are some of the best of all time. I have to admit, The Beatles version of Words Of Love is just slightly superior to Holly’s because of Lennon-McCartney-Harrison vocals. My personal favorite song of Buddy Holly is: True Love Ways. It has a very special meaning for me. It was a gift for his wife and it was his first stereo recording session (and his only of his life as this was his last studio recording session where he also recorded It Doesn’t Matter Anymore and Raining in My Heart”).

Offline I played some Buddy Holly tunes for some friends recently, and asked if anyone was a fan. I was thrilled when one of them said “who isn’t?” It is a shame that his music isn’t as prominent as it once was, but that’s to be expected with time I suppose. That said, I’ll throw some 
out for my personal favorite song he did, Down the Line…

Offline I’m a big Buddy Fan, and I always thought he had a proto “British Invasion” sound with that jangly guitar and nasal vocal. He and the Crickets’ are a lot of fun to play, and great material for a budding guitarist to learn with.

Buddy was far ahead of his time.Out of the 50’s folks I much prefer Buddy and the Everly Brothers to Elvis,and the sun record fellows.Doesn’t Paul own the publishing rights to Buddy’s catalog now?I do recall him being involved in “The Real Buddy Holly story”.
