Yep, Pink Floyd are one of my many favourite bands. I’d say just below the Beatles and just above the Who.I know this is crazy but I honestly think PF deserve more attention and are underrated although I’m sure some people disagree.
I guess I’m one of the ones who disagree. They had massive publicity at various times in their careers (including the “reunion” at Live 8), albums made into movies and some albums that sold gazillions. I’m not sure what more attention they could get?
I don’t think they’re underrated per se, but perhaps they’re misunderstood. Roger Waters has been called ‘the gloomiest man in rock’, but he’s not gloomy; a bit cynical perhaps, but not gloomy. A lot of people don’t ‘get’ Pink Floyd, and honestly, I can’t really blame them– Pink Floyd can be hard to get. But once the bug has bitten you…

I didn’t really explain it very well but people of my age don’t really listen to them and I never hear PF songs on the radio so I feel like they should be receiving more attention. But as you said Buzzwangle , people may find it hard to understand their music although they do have quite a few commercial songs (Wish You Were Here being the most obvious).

It’s dinosaur music, like most of the output of the 60s and 70s – very little of the amazing music from that time gets much attention nowadays. On top of that the audience for music today is so fragmented it wouldn’t get that much attention even if anyone played it; which most major stations rarely do.
I can assure you that at the time they were huge and got all the attention and publicity they deserved. There were a lot of ‘album bands’ around and they were one of the biggest – with the odd occasional song on the charts – same with Led Zep.

You say gloomy like it’s a bad thing.
Why you…. you… GLOOMY man! How dare you!
I didn’t say it like it was a bad thing; you may have heard it that way, but I assure you that was not the intent. It just isn’t really true in this case, and being a stickler for correct usage of language and all that…

Just because your peers don’t listen to it and you don’t hear it on the radio doesn’t mean it’s underrated. *restrains herself from going into full Grammar-Nazi mode* I think what you’re really trying to get at is they’re not widely known enough (among certain circles). Which is partly true– while classic rock fans will know what you’re talking about (cough, cough, us forumpudlians), your average pop-music-listening teen/twentysomething will be like, ‘Which one’s Pink?’
(Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

Listening
to
Meddle
right now
for the first time.
(What? I’m just trying to fit the trippy-Floyd vibe.)
‘One Of These Days’ was interesting, nice background music. I really liked ‘A Pillow Of Clouds’, ’tis pretty and dreamy with nice acoustic and steel slide guitar. It’s also got a nice sort of underlying darkness beneath the pretty dreamy bit, which is so Pink Floyd 😛 . ‘Fearless’ was nice as well, more of those floating vocals which seem to be so prominent on this album. It’s got a nice lyrical vibe as well, and (almost) mentions a Beatles song. ‘San Tropez’ is… what the hell is this?! ‘Seamas’ – woof woof! (Such swingy. I must re-adjust my worldview.)
‘Echoes’– I heard the Live In Pompeii version just this morning and was overwhelmed by a dozen Gilmour’s-hands-and-Strats on the screen. (Too much guitar awesomeness.) I like it, the keyboard is neat and it reminds me of ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ a little bit. And the paired vocals by Gilmour and Wright are gorgeous, dreamy, and mournful; reminds me of ‘Breathe’, which is (occasionally) my favourite Floyd ever. And the major-minor change thing.
HEY WAITAMINNIT WHAT WAS THAT?! THEY JUST NABBED A LINE FROM Across The Universe !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
‘…inviting and inciting me…’
Okeydokey, I love ‘Echoes’.

Meddle is my favorite. “I’ll climb that hill in my own way. Just wait around for the right day.”
Yep, that’s a good line. That’s partly what I was referring to when I said the song had a nice lyrical vibe: ‘I’ll show you… all in good time.’

Agreed. You gotta find a Classic Rock station to hear groups like Floyd, Zep, AC/DC, Beatles ect……
Although, it’s cool seeing young teenagers with the T-Shirts and liking their stuff

Too often you see young teenagers with the t-shirts who say ‘Oh, I only liked the t-shirt, I’ve never heard of the band’.
Not I, not I!
And while I’m here, are there any other fans of The Division Bell? I notice a lot of Floyd fans rag on it because it’s all after-Roger-Waters-left and stuff, but I’m dead keen on it. Perhaps because it was part of my earliest Floyducation.
Ever since I heard David Gilmour energetically deny that ‘Poles Apart’ was written about his and Waters’s relationship, I’ve thought of it as such. I’m so sorry David, I can’t get out of the habit. It reminds me of ‘Wish You Were Here’ and ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’– there’s that theme of estranged friends, one of whom changed, but the first one still sort of thinks fondly upon the other for what he used to be. ‘I thought of you, and the years and all the sadness fell away from me. And did you know . . . *echo echo echo* I never thought you’d lose the light in your eyes.’
Edit: I changed my mind, it’s actually yet another Syd Barrett tribute. Or perhaps it’s just a song. But I like to think of it as such
And now I’m all sad
On another note, I listened to ‘If’ for the first time in over a year last night; I’d only heard it once before, last January when my friend-who-is-a-bigger-fan-of-PF-than-I-am mentioned it, calling it ‘probably the only love song they ever wrote’. (I beg to differ; ‘Take It Back’ could count as a love song of the traditional sort.) I like it. If I go insane, please don’t put your wires in my brain.

I noticed that meself.
pepperland said in another thread about The Wall
I think it’s one of their best albums, it’s got a lot of great songs like Hey You, In the Flesh? and (obviously) Another Brick in the Wall and Comfortably Numb.
One thing I’m getting tired of is Roger Waters trying to be David Bowie. (Warning: content of spoiler may offend fervent The Wall fans)
And also it’s rather complicated for my tastes– too much storytelling and not enough rocking out. Perhaps I’m just not used to it yet… it’ll probably grow on me with time.
Oh the trials of being a Floyd fan.

Pink Floyd moment: when I was out with my family and some event today, they were playing music. I couldn’t really tell who it was because it was on really quiet, but I was like “Why do I recognize this so much?”. Once I can hear the vocals, I realized it was something from the Dark Side Of The Moon album (I think it was Us And Them or Time).
