Here’s something interesting:
Paul, Linda and David Gilmour. I’ve never seen this photo before.
A quick Google search indicates that it was taken at a Rolling Stones concert in 1976.

Pink Floyd was indestructible from 1969-1977. Their output in that years was amazing, Meddle, DSOTM, WYWY and Animals are all in my top 30 albums. Piper was good, but I feel it’s quite overrated and some of the songs feel disjointed and not in a good way. The Wall was the sign of things failing for me and the album and film felt very overblown to me, with only a handful of songs on the album making my top 40 PF songs which is quite pathetic really considering how many songs there are. The Final Cut to me is pretty bad, with Not Now John being the best song on there. AMLOR was alright, little too 80s for my liking but On the Turning Away and One Slip are good. The Division Bell is pretty good, their best since Animals for me. Haven’t heard much from the Endless River but I’m sure it’s alright!

I used to think they were at a led zeppelin’s show

Just Got their Discovery box set today. It Sounds Great
Nice – I have had it for a while now and still ‘rediscovering’ how much I liked the band back in the day. Must get their new one soon.

Yeah. What I meant by that post is that it’s too early for me to judge it or have an opinion.Ah. Any first impressions?
Just had my first listen. I like it. I think David Gilmour called it ambient music – which was not a great way for me to arrive at it as I think most of that genre (if it is a genre) is, as I said in another thread, basically elevator music. And some of this album sounds like it would fit.
Luckily, other parts sound more exciting – with Echoes (no pun intended, and I have a watch to sell you if you believe that) of Meddle, DSOTM and Wish You Were Here. Unfortunately I had also read a comment somewhere from someone who thought it would do well as an alternate soundtrack for Blade Runner – and it was reminiscent of that at times, with a points decision to Vangelis for those bits.
I will try and watch / listen to the DVD tomorrow and to the album in 5.1, I decided to stick with the CD the first time through. Overall I am much more positive about it than I was a few months ago, I actually put off buying it for a bit but the Boxing Day sale of the 2-disc set sucked me in. It all makes me wish they hadn’t waited 20 years and that young Master Waters would stop being such a $#^@%.

The cover looks like its from the end of the final Narnia book ‘The Last Battle’.
They are an odd band as far as album covers go – some of the best out there, and some not so much.

Agreed @trcanberra. The weirdest one in my opinion is Atom Heart Mother . Who wants to look at the backside of a cow?
By hook or by crook, I'll be last in this book.

Pink Floyd is fab.
My dad is quite keen on Pink Floyd, so my brain has been soaked with Division Bell and Animals vibes (the latter being his particular favourite) since when-I-was-very-young. Recently, he got a guitar and expressed the desire to learn Wish You Were Here, the song, so of course I had to go and learn it. Then I gave the album a listen and it was
TRIPPY
in an awesome way. Also Dark Side Of The Moon, which has some rather Beatlesque moments– for instance, ‘Time’, which makes me think of All Things Must Pass for some reason. Okay, fine, that’s a solo George. But still. There are other instances of Abbey Roadishness, among other things.
So yeah, as I said elsewhere, they have now become my second-favourite band.
Beatles still in the lead by 95,000 light-years though.

I’ve probably said this before, but Piper through Obscured by Clouds is the best Floyd period. Dark Side of the Moon through The Wall is second best. And anything after that is the worst. I don’t even own any of it.
Ha ha – once again we will have to disagree. I love A Momentary Lapse of Reason. And why the arbitrary split ending in Obscured? I see a strong progression between Meddle and Moon. If forced to I would split them between everything up to Dark Side of the Moon and everything after – which seem less like group efforts.

I split it there because Dark Side of the Moon marks the beginning of their commercial, more mainstream albums, and the end of the meandering, mellow psychedelia.

I was listening to ‘Cloud 9’ earlier and nearly flipped out. At 1:52, in the guitar solo, there’s an incredibly Pink Floydish bit. It only lasts about a second, but neat anyway.

Mmm. I tried to find a ‘cleaner’ version, but you know how it is.
Just take the good. The pieces you don’t need are mine.

Who? What?
I found a good one. Just the cover of the album and the song, nothing fussy. Editing it in above.

My favourite Pink floyd album is “music from the film More” ’cause it sounds to me very DIY produced and casual… And the music is so calmed and nice…
anyway , if anybody wants to get into them my suggestion would be “start from their first album and then on”… And read a bit about syd barret and their early days…
