The Wall is too much, it’s a very large album even considering that it’s a Pink Floyd album. You are exposed to a lot of sounds and it might overwhelm you.

I don’t like anything after The Wall.  The Wall is the album where Roger Waters ruined Pink Floyd.  It’s a good enough album, though.

Personally, I would recommend hearing Piper at the Gates of Dawn, A Saucerful of Secrets, Atom Heart Mother , and Meddle.

Totally agree. More people should explore their psychedelic roots.  People seem to forget that pretty much only them and Deep Purple successfully made the transition from the psychedelic era.

^ Right. Anything they did, except maybe Piper and Meddle to a lesser extent, up until ‘Dark Side’ is completely overlooked by most. There’s a bit in there that you might not be that keen on, and some things you’ll never want to hear again (I’m thinking about ‘Seamus’ – look it up, if you dare), but there’s also a hell of a lot of brilliant music.

Have been given Animals, Wish You Were Here and Echoes which add to The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon already in iTunes.

Normally i cut up any greatest hits for artists who’s albums i already have as i don’t like having duplicates but according to wiki there are a lot of edits on Echoes so is it worthwhile keeping the whole compilation or are they superfluous and binnable?

Echoes really deserves to be heard as it was made, as a side-long musical piece.  It’s quite an experience.

There’s an edited version of “Echoes”?!

Does ”edited” mean shortened? If so, then yes, on the ‘Echoes’ complilation it’s about 15 minutes long. As SatanHimself said, it is one of those songs that really needs to be listened to in full.

Wow, that’s priceless: they amputate the track, then steal its title for the compilation itself! Laughable.

I meant various songs on the album Echoes (a greatest hits) have been edited, not just the song Echoes. To be honest i’m not that up to speed on the Pink Floyd catalogue and didn’t even realise they had a song called Echoes. I don’t have the album Meddles either.

I don’t like most compilations.

On another note, my favorite Floyd album is Animals.

‘Meddle’ is a phenomenal album.  If you like ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’, you should definitely check out what they were doing right before it.

As proof, here’s “Fearless” from that album:

You have to check it out. Echoes is amazing. It IS one of those songs that should be listened to in it’s full glory, otherwise it spoils the song. It’s a true masterpiece in my opinion.

Behind Dark Side, Meddle is the close second among their best work IMO. MMM, and anyone else, if you like the sound of that song up there ^ or, like SH said, DSOTM, then it’s an absolute must-listen. An album that’s a tad overlooked, I think.

If you can make it all the way through echoes (its a 23 minute song) you may notice the lyrics “Inciting and Inviting me”, taken from Across The Universe .
Floyds first album “Piper at the Gates of Dawn” is kind of goofy in my opinion, I think they released See Emily Play from piper as a single, its a pretty cool song.

I would suggest Dark Side of the Moon for starters though.  It is probably their best piece of work.

Another case of a different version of the album in the USA and UK.  See Emily Play is not on the Piper album in the UK or in the Discovery box.  I used to have Relics on LP which had the track, I need to hunt it down on CD for Emily and a few other early singles.

As to the OP, yes, they really are an album band, so diving in to one of the ones suggested above is the best way.  I was lucky enough to get the Discovery box at half price on sale, so was working my way through with great joy as I loved the band way back when.  They are now ‘on hold’ as I work through my Beatles stack.

I have an abiding memory of Meddle as some of the tracks were used on a surfing film my girlfriend at the time dragged me to see, I still recall the marijuana fumes drifting around the old beat up cinema we watched it in.
