i bought the Discovery box set when i turned 14, and i’ve listened to all of the albums in that set, but the only Albums i know well are Piper at The Gates of Dawn and DSoTM
They’re good albums, but you’re missing out on a lot if you don’t know Meddle, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, etc. that well.

I’ve been playing along to some Floyd and jeez did Gilmour ever love his phaser pedal, it’s practically all the way through two albums at the least. I can’t be sure but I think he either used the Leslie effect in Us and Them or simply turned his phaser speed up and maybe used a touch of wah as well.

I saw this article in Rolling Stone today. I can’t wait to get home and check out the item #6 bit about Ticket To Ride on my headphones. If anyone already has it queued up I’d love to know if it’s true .

First of all, I knew 7/10 of those things already
and secondly, there’s been a discussion of that in this very thread (I think toward the beginning). I can attest that it’s quite true, I listen for it just about every time I play the album (and I’ve played the album a whole smeggin’ lot ).

The first time I heard Dark Side of the Moon I was in Hawaii. I was living in a van that some friends had allowed me to park in front of their 2-story, 4 room A-frame apartment. This was on Maui and the owner lived in Honolulu which is located on a different island (this is important to the story). As counterculture types were known to do, the renters kind of redecorated including cutting large holes in the roof to see the stars at night and painting all the walls in a psychedelic manner. This one guy (a Magic Alex type) had wired the whole place up to be a massive speaker. So I was walking back from the beach after watching the sunset and all of a sudden I hear what sounds like a cranking machine sound blasting from the house. I thought perhaps “Alex” had finally gone over the edge and then the bass kicked in. When the guitar solo came out of the sax, I swear the whole house shook and the sound hurtled out through the holes in the roof and up to the sky. It was so dramatic that to this day I can recall the astonished vibe I felt. I was even more astonished that this turned out to be my favorite “headphones at 2 o’clock in the morning bike riding, interstellar atom hearts”. If there was any 60s band that I thought would never reach mass popularity, Pink Floyd would have been them. Which one’s Pink indeed!
… away away away

I must have known that at some time in my life and just forgot. Maybe it will come back to me when I listen later .

It’d be lovely if they could spellcheck Rick Wright’s name sometime.

Ahhh I knew I should have taken a screenshot, they fixed it. They spelt his name Rick Write in the first paragraph, here’s the archive from a couple of days ago.

OOOOHHHH YESSSSSSS.
Floydian slip: when you say something and it accidentally comes out as a Pink Floyd lyric.
Floydian Slip: a weekly, one-hour syndicated radio program produced by Random Precision Media LLC (RPM) featuring the music of British rock band Pink Floyd. (Wikipedia)
Floydian Slip: ‘One Slip’ by Pink Floyd. (It’s not very Floydian, though, in my opinion I don’t like that album at all anyway. )

He used a Uni-Vibe too, definitely on “Breathe”, and probably elsewhere.
I remember reading an interview with DG in some guitar mag back in the 80s where he mentioned somebody asking him something like “What would you do if you didn’t have all these effects to rely on?” And his reply to that was, “Well, what would I do if I didn’t have an electric guitar and an amplifier?”
One of my favourite DSOTM memories was last August, lounging around Mom Bontee’s pool with family, listening to the local rock station play the whole thing uninterrupted to coincide with the solar eclipse. (8-year old Katie was a little bemused by Uncle Von turning up the volume during “On The Run” – not exactly her idea of enjoyable pop music! And my sister had to explain that, yes, the cacophony of clocks was indeed part of the music.)
