Disagree to a certain extent, @vonbontee. Syd’s ghost hung heavy over Dark Side and Wish You Were Here, while The Wall‘s Pink was more an amalgamation of Syd and Roger, whose father had been killed during the Anzio Bridgehead in WWII (portrayed in the “lost” Wall song, When the Tigers Broke Free – rejected by the other members of Floyd because it was too personal), and suffered from depression and a sense of disillusionment and wanting to isolate himself during the In the Flesh tour which came to a close in 1977.

I finally listened to The Piper at the Gates of Dawn for the first time the other day. I have to say it is a pretty awesome album and I can see why it gets praised so much. I can hear a lot of its influence in modern psychedelic music.
The next albums I feel I need to listen to are The Wall and Meddle.

I would definitely recommend those, @Flyingbrians. Which albums have you heard?

Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and now Piper. I grew up on and loved those first 3 albums for years but i’m trying to explore their discography more.
I’ve been holding off on The Wall because people seem very split on it. Comfortably Numb’s an amazing song though

The Wall is really good. It has Don’t Leave Me Now, which is a bad track, but it rocks and rolls for the rest of the album, and cuts really deep.

Abolutely listen to the Wall. I would recommend listening to it from beginning to end in one sitting despite is length. Once you listen to it an notice it’s themes, it is interesting to research the album and Roger Waters’s thought process during its creation. It is fantastic music and is very different from any other Pink Floyd albums.

Also, definitely listen to Meddle. In my opinion it is a very strong album that can be seen as a segue into DSOTM. My favorite Pink Floyd song might be Meddle which is the whole second side of the album.

‘Echoes’ is my favourite as well, and I don’t say that lightly… if I could marry a song, I’d give myself to it. That’s an awkward simile but there it is.
I think Obscured By Clouds is a better segue into Dark Side, though. But it’s not quite as good as either the preceeding or following album.

My mistake, I have never actually listened to Obscured by Clouds despite Pink Floyd being my second favorite band. I have never given it the time of day as I need to.

Although further away from Dark Side of the Moon, i’d still argue that Echoes is the precursor to that fine sound they developed, and it marks a turning point; one more notable than Obscured By Clouds.

I listened to Meddle yesterday and yes it is a very strong album. You can definetely hear the beginnings of DSOTM, particularly in One of These Days and Echoes. I wasn’t too keen Seamus on first listen…

Just discovered The Squirrels Not-So-Bright-Side of the Moon. It’s err interesting.
Part of the fun is spotting the in-jokes about the covers by other artists! (They’re almost rude about Easy Star All-Stars).

Well, yes, but the lyric-heavy introspection first becomes clear on OBC. And it’d have been their first whole album with a specific lyrical theme — that of life journeys, which was considerably refined on A Piece For Assorted Lunatics.

Good dog I don’t mind Seamus. One reason is that it’s a bit of a grab bag of an album, saying goodbye to one set of musical influences and hello to another set and a new style emerging in Fearless. And you can trace the precursors with Meddle and OBC but DSOTM is still a shock and in a way it painted them into a corner where songs like Seamus could never overcome the heavy seriousness of it all.
