So, I was looking at the “Songs by other bands that sound Beatleish” thread and I thought that we could do “Songs by other bands that sound Floydish” in this thread.
“Unobstructed Universe” – Unobstructed Universe
This is Side A from a somewhat obscure 1976 spacey jazz-rock record I have that sounds very Floydish at times.
“Lucky” – Radiohead
Music critics have pointed out that this song sounds kinda Floydish. The lead guitar during the choruses does sound pretty Gilmour-esque.
“Forecast Fascist Future” – of Montreal
There’s only one reason I’m including this one. This one came on on my ipod and my dad, not knowing who it was, asked “Who is this? Barrett-era Pink Floyd?.”

I’ve got one. ‘Octavarium’ by Dream Theater– the first four minutes or so sound like a complete rip-off of ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’.

I see David returned to the amphitheater in Pompeii, Italy for a couple of shows this week. No good video is available yet but this PF rehearsal footage of Echoes from the same place in 1971 is interesting. Warning: video contains partial nudity
David and Rick aren’t wearing shirts 😉

Ouch.*
All the better for the Ahhh Girl/Mlle. Kittygirl types of Floyd fans, methinks
Anyway, it was ’72, not ’71, that they did the Live At Pompeii thing. And I’m pretty sure that the above is an incomplete portion of the ‘Echoes’ segment of the Live At Pompeii film.
Okay, I’m finished being a nutty pedantic Floydster… I’d do the same if it were a Beatles mistake, y’know?!
*Big deal, I’ve seen worse— at least they had full-length trousers

Yeah, it would have been better if they all were shirtless (so un-Pink Floydish). This video was labeled the Director’s Cut. The full length version is 25 minutes and I didn’t think the casual listener would make it all the way through. The guitar playing is thrilling so that’s what I was going for. I guess the audience was a little upset that David didn’t play Echoes the other night. This is from the online Rolling Stone review:
Throughout the concert, which spanned nearly three hours (including an intermission), the audience – which seemed to come from all corners of the Earth – remained mostly reverent, applauding at the end of songs and keeping quiet during the performances themselves. The crowd’s only moment of dissent came toward the end, after Gilmour & Co.’s literally fiery “Run Like Hell” when the fans called out for “Echoes” and stomped their feet on the ground to no avail. Gilmour tells Rolling Stone it’s too difficult to perform that song without the late Rick Wright.

Having been to Pompeii and the Naples National Archaeological Museum, I really enjoyed the beginning of that video.
Are there any videos of Paul McCartney playing shirtless? Answer in the Who’s the best looking Beatle thread if there is one. We wouldn’t want to derail this thread, now would we?

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I was thinking, ‘Aww, he shoulda played ‘Echoes”, and then I remembered that Rick is no longer with us, therefore ‘Echoes’ should not, can not, and will not be played by Dave. Very right too, I applaud him, but I keep forgetting that Rick is dead and gone, and it breaks my heart anew every time I remember… especially like this. He and Dave had such a wonderful musical partnership, it’s so tragic that it’s been lost. *gently weeps*

It’s weird SG I’ve always thought of Rick in a sorrowful way and I’m not really sure why.
Perhaps cos he always made sort of melancholy minor-key music and his occasional lyrical contributions were a bit glum-sounding as well.

I can understand that. I can also probably tell from this that you’d not be too fond of a good majority of Robert Plant’s Led Zep concert attire. Why? Well, y’know, all those open shirts and all…
…Anyways, that’s enough of my Led Derailing banter.

This is pretty funny. Nick Mason’s official Facebook page shared this.
Guy Buys Pink Floyd’s ‘Meddle’ On Vinyl, Discovers Surprising Message When He Gets It Home
We’re always hearing that vinyl is making a comeback and with the amount of reissues of old albums, and new releases appearing on the format, there must be some truth to it. But while reissues are all good there’s nothing like stumbling across a classic album while down at the local thrift shop.
Comedian Ian Boldsworth found once such discovery when he happened upon, and purchased, a used copy of Pink Floyd‘s Meddle on vinyl. The record is the group’s sixth studio album and features their track “Echoes” which takes up the entirety of side 2 and runs around 23 minutes long.
For Boldsworth it’s the only side of the album that was playable, because when he got the record home he found a surprise. After taking the vinyl out of its sleeve he discovered it had a message scratched vengefully onto side 1 which read: “You 2-timing b*****d.”
In that one sentence an entire story is told. Somebody has cheated on their partner, then had the audacity to ask for their records back, to which they received them but with a little addition. His favorite Pink Floyd record has had a message of retribution scratched into it.
It didn’t bother Boldsworth though. As he says in the tweet below, the amusing nature of the message made up for not being able to listen to side 1.
It does makes you wonder though, whether there’s some more Pink Floyd records floating about where this one was bought, one side completely unplayable. Meddle definitely got ‘meddled’ with.
The lesson here, if you break up with an ex never leave your records there. Plus, always check you secondhand vinyl before taking it home.

I was doing some cleaning today and I found an old art project. Back when I was in eighth grade in 2005-2006, we made “guitars” out of wood. One kid in class shaped his guitar body like an anatomically correct human heart. One of my friends shaped his guitar body like Stewie Griffin.
I, however, shaped mine like a pig.

Now dragging the thread back on topic because I can ALWAYS witter about Pink Floyd, my top five albums (as of NOW*) are as follows:
The Dark Side Of The Moon
Wish You Were Here
Atom Heart Mother
Animals
Tie: The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn / A Saucerful Of Secrets (truly A Nice Pair indeed).
I love them all (with the exception of A Momentary Lapse Of Reason), though.
*This might change any second though.

Atom Heart Mother above Piper and Animals? Interesting.
I would go
Dark Side Of The Moon
Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
Wish You Were Here
Meddle
Animals
A Saucerfull Of Secrets/The Wall
Both have very high highs, but have lows as well. Don’t Leave Me Now on The Wall especially stands out as a low. Also I love Jugband Blues. Could be my favorite standalone Floyd song.
