Sorry Starr Shine? but as nice as it would be, no one’s going to GMO animals to improve them. When people GMO animals, they do it to make them produce more meat, eggs, and milk.

There are only 3 GMO animals that have been approved for commercial use, all in the US and/or Canada. There is a goat and a chicken that produce medicines, and a salmon that grows faster. The GMO salmon is the only animal intended for the supermarket shelves, going on sale in Canada from August 2017 and expected to go on sale in the US during the second half of this year.
So, there’s only the GMO salmon that’s available, and so far it’s only available in Canada, which I’d suggest isn’t really “many, many people” but rather a small test market.

What are your thoughts on communism/socialism.
Personally, i think it sounds great on paper but in practice it’s terrible.
A perfect example of this is the USSR. In 1917, the Russians decided they’ve had enough of Czar Nicolas and decided instead to have a communist nation. Sadly, they made a horrible decision and had to suffer through lots of hardship because of it, especially under Stalin, who’s regularly compared to Hitler.

Hitler gets a bad rep’…..But there was one great thing he did and proves he was better than Stalin…… Hitler shot Hitler.

The USSR was hardly socialism or communism though, was it? The whole point of socialism is that the workers democratically own the means of production, which was not the case there, as they were controlled by the state which was run autocratically and with total control.
And I don’t know if you’ve read the Communist Manifesto, @Dark Overlord , but Marx’s idea of communism was that it would be stateless – after socialism would be set up, the state would ‘wither away’ to create an anarcho-communist utopia. It’s vague and naïve yes, but its also completely different to the USSR.
Not to mention, the USA does its very best to destroy socialism wherever it appears. They’ve staged so many coups and fought so many wars against it at this point it kind of makes their “socialism could never be successful” argument look weak, since surely if it was so bad then it would fail anyway without need for an invasion or similar.

Education and healthcare should never be privately run in my opinion. Those are two industries we shouldn’t allow capitalism to taint, because it switches the priorities from “we need to ensure a healthy population” to “we need to make as much money off these patients as possible”.

You may have a point but what i think is most important is that the people wanted communism and what they got was Stalin, which shows that while Marx may have believed in a utopia where everyone was equal, those who follow don’t get those results.
Not to mention, the USA does its very best to destroy socialism wherever it appears. I agree, it’s really annoying how Americans hated communism so much that they’d get involved in wars they have no business being in just because those countries are communist.

We can have elements of socialism without being a socialist nation.

Socialism has failed everywhere that it’s ever been tried over any length of time…….Everywhere.
There is no excuse for being ignorant of that fact…..Or the fact that Marxism for all of the initially attractive utopian visions of its first leaders has led to the death of hundreds of millions of people. Marx and his ilk had an excuse but people today who can look at the actual effects of socialism wherever it’s been practiced have NO excuse……That is a criminal ignorance!
I’m already hearing on here….. ‘it’s America’s fault they failed because of meddling’ Really? Russia? China? The 6 million Ukrainians that starved to death in the 1930s America’s fault!!
…..Or it was the wrong kind of socialism
…….Or the wrong kind of leader.
Now capitalism is far from perfect. The inequalities of wealth extreme. Some caused by ancestry, some by criminality…….But most by productivity, genius and bloody hard work.
In a socialist country it’s harder to stomach that, everyone…. everyone who has more than you has got it by stealing it from you. That reality is really appealing to the darkest side of humanity….And it justifies corruption…..’They got what they got by corruption I must do the same to succeed’
Socialism’s appeal to the young en mass, and the well intentioned but naive …….(I can see it here) is a product of our education.
Most people know about WWII and the Nazis…..but they know next to nothing about Russia and China….Their brutality…The millions and millions who starved to death. We fought a cold war that nearly destroyed the planet to defeat that poison……..
But now it’s somehow become deviously linked to identity politics…..This deadly poison like designer drugs sets you and your group apart as …’cool’….
Capitalism has lifted more people out of poverty than any other system developed. Study, (but you won’t) how it has lifted the standard of living in China……
Finally some hope for agreement through reflection……Close to DO’s last comment above…….Consider the countries most quoted and admired as Socialist, in truth practice compassionate Capitalism. That’s a very different kettle-of-fish. And your generations best hope.

That isn’t socialism, more like a perversion of communism. Not the same thing.

Some confirmation there of what I was saying in the post you replied to……..
Perhaps before we go any further explain what you mean by ‘that’……Then explain what, ‘is’ socialism in your mind and where your kind of socialism is currently, or has previously being ‘practiced’….(American English both a noun and a verb).
Then we can discuss this politely understanding where we are both coming from.
