Yes, men can get raped, and women can be rapists.

Well you wouldn’t be forced to be a mother, because you weren’t forced to have sex(unless you were, but that’s a different story). If you’re not in the position to have a child, then as I said, practice abstinence or be smart and safe and also careful about sex. Also at you saying it’s mostly men against abortion, how many women for abortion have actually gone through with a pregnancy?
The current state that my country is in, if travel was forbidden from Ireland, I would be forced to be a mother. Thankfully I’m able to go abroad if needs be for medical purposes. Of course, practice safe sex, that I agree with- you’re an idiot if you don’t glove it before you shove it (one of the student union’s slogans 😉 ).
Millions of women have had abortions and had children before or after. If you have 3 children and you can only financially cover yourself and your 3 children and you find you’re pregnant again, your only option if you want to avoid having to give up a child for adoption, is to have an abortion. Similarly your personal and financial situations would be far different if you became pregnant when you were 16 than if you were pregnant when you were 26.

ASJ, I am not a troll and it really pisses me off that you would call me one, what I was saying there is that the girl should carry on with it because the child can go on and live a happy life. I respect your opinion, but you have to understand that I am personally against abortion. Not to bring in any more hate, but I like to think of it as imagine if you were aborted.Starr Shine?, There are males who have gotten pregnant, but they were born female and spent a lot of time and money to become a man.
Billy Shears, is it really possible for a man to get raped by a female, I thought the only way a man could get raped was from another man.
During pregnancy it is the mother’s health that is of the biggest concern, not the foetus’. Can you imagine how traumatic it would be for you to be first physically assaulted, then have to carry your assaulter’s child??? Very few women would be mentally and physically strong enough to go through that 9 month period of having to carry an unwanted child, conceived out of assault.
Imagine if I was aborted? Well I wouldn’t know I was would I? While there isn’t 100% definitive proof that a foetus can’t feel pain in the early stages of pregnancy, there is evidence that supports that they don’t feel pain until far later in the pregnancy than abortions are normally allowed. 92% of abortions are performed within the first 13 weeks.
I don’t personally mind if a person themselves is against abortion and wouldn’t get an abortion themselves but when they try and stop another person from being allowed to avail of an abortion, that annoys me.
Also a man can get raped by a woman, as seen by these men’s stories

The “debate” really hinges on when you think life begins. If you don’t consider a fetus to be a human being with its own set of rights then an abortion is really an uncontroversial medical procedure.
If it were a simple matter of “everyone has the option to take this utterly benign pill and avoid pregnancy if they want” this would also be alot less of an issue. But access to effective birth control is not a simple thing, and no birth control method is 100% effective.
The suggestion that women can simply carry babies to term and then hand them off for adoption or whatever is cavalier at best – there will always be consequences for the mother, some of them indelible.
If we provided excellent education on reproductive issues and health, and if we provided universal access to birth control then the attitude of “hey, you chose to get pregnant” might make more sense, but the reality is way more nuanced and complex and bright line rules make no sense in this context.
Personally, I don’t know exactly when life begins, and, not being god, I don’t see how I can figure it out. Do we actually want our legislators, many of whom regularly demonstrate the maturity level of the average chimpanzee, making such a determination for all of us? That’s between you and your god or goddess or universe or whatever enables your moral compass. And without the assumption that there is one simple “correct” answer to the question of when life begins, this stops being a moral issue and starts being a simple health issue, and that’s how I choose to treat it.

I think the biggest source of controversy is the amount of unique ways a certain person of group of people define “alive.”

Technically a brother and a sister getting married is unhealthy for the offspring, but I agree with HMBeatlesFan that those types of relationships can exist for those who want it. Unconsentual sex between a father and daughter, or uncle and neice is terrible and should not be happening.
I personally know someone who was a victim of the latter. It is a disgusting thing to have happen.

People like that piss me off and put a bad name on incest by associating it with rape and pedophilia, which is clearly wrong, but there are good examples of incest. I feel really bad that in the US, incest is illegal (except for Rhode Island, so go there if you want to have sex with your relative) with some states giving life sentences. We need to show the world how similar incest is to being gay so that it can be considered legal and socially acceptable.

Time for another topic,
What are your thoughts on religion?
I personally think religion is individual beliefs held by people, so no two people have the exact same beliefs.
And the physical effects of believing are due to the placebo effect.

I think that organised religion has been the cause of a lot of evil throughout history. I have been a Methodist my whole life, but people like John Lennon have caused me to question whether or not God is real. However, singing sacred music in a choral ensemble gave me a newfound appreciation for worship. If such beautiful music can fill my ordinary head and inspire people, God must be working through this music. I believe the same about Beatles and Beach Boys music.
While I am not sure of the validity of the entire Bible, I do believe in God because I have experienced his work firsthand through service and music.
Other religions like Judaism and Islam that are in some way parallel to Christianity I am obviously accepting of, but I have little interest in their teachings, as I think more enriched philosophy exists in the Bible.
Religions like Hinduism and Buddhism I think create cool artwork and really neat practices. Clearly they were on to something in India as it totally captivated George Harrison . And while I am not as into it as George was, I do have great respect for these religions.

I believe that it’s all within yourself no one else can make you change, to quote George. I’m agnostic about God , and tend to be a bit wary of organised religion, but I believe that true spirituality is a valuable thing. (Religion and spirituality are not synonymous.)
@sir walter raleigh, you do have a point about music… I guess music is my little bit of everyday godliness.

Music is part of most religious rituals because (1) participating in group music making makes you feel good and builds community and (2) good music touches the soul in a way very little else does.
I’m not much on anthropomorphic concepts of god, but I love the idea that god is everywhere, that all goodness is god.
I fight against my own moral relativism and, frequently, depression. I would love to have a deeper relationship with god, or at least a more active spiritual side. But for me, rigid religious precepts don’t work. A broader, gentler kind of spirituality is appealing but, frankly, a whole lot harder to achieve than simply subscribing to one of the major religions, or even a minor one.

I had a big post planned but since the page refreshed on me while I was 80% done with it, so here’s a truncated version. God ‘s a fake. He’s like Hitler, treating the people he likes well but the people who are against him like s**t and bringing them to a cruel place called hell. Psalm 23 (the lord is my shepherd) means that god eats people once they die. He hates innocent people like Jews and gays and if he were true, the holocaust victims would be rotting in hell. Thou shall not kill contradicts several bible stories, like David and Goliath. The bible is edited like George Lucas edits Star Wars and was originally spoken orally, similar to fairytales. The pope goes against the bible’s word by claiming anyone can go to heaven. Don’t think you other religions are getting away that easy because you have just as crazy beliefs as well. I however will say that some of the nicest people I’ve ever met are Christians.

Indeed.
The Puritans didn’t know what they were missing…
@HMBeatlesfan you’re just criticising Christianity, which I can understand. Nothing to do with God …

That is so. I have no problems with Christians as a rule, just as long as they don’t try to shove their religion down my throat.

Personally I believe there is a God and it’s humans are the ones who bring in all the s**t* (which opens a billion paths of debate). So pretty much what John said
Jesus was all right, but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It’s them twisting it that ruins it for me.
I had a number of years of having a faith and by the end, when I was also going thru my own hell (or so I thought at the time, worse was to come), the church I was at had so many people being polite to other’s faces but bitching about them as soon as possible when they had gone. A miserable environment to be in.
I think that the teachings of the Bible are good ways of living life but man (plural) is too quick to take over and make it their way where you have to fit into a specific way of being; rules and boxes and having to seek approval to do anything. I can’t do that way of living any more.
You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can’t be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt‘One’ – U2
That’s pretty accurate for me in how religion is.
I don’t think it’s right, however, to force our opinion(s) onto others.
*I don’t mean cancer, tornados and anything like that. More the narking, “thou must do this and not that to please thy God or thou are going to hell!!!”. That probably makes no sense to anyone but me.
